Hey guys,
So here’s an interesting one for the N/A Impreza guys.
In Ireland we got the 1.6’s and the later Hawkeye with the ej204, but never a 2.5 RS as seen in various other countries such as the ej251/2/3/4 so here goes.
Pictured is an ej253 block utilising an ej251 intake, ej201 fuel rail with ej203 injectors. Wiring harness is from an ej201. Small upgrade with the aluminium front pulley and (not installed) power steering pump.
Engine will be going into a 2004 blobeye, ECU is currently a 2.0 non turbo with a HKS AFR piggyback to alter any fuelling issues ( hopefully) and an AEM Wideband to monitor the AFR readings.
I will be posting an update as the project progresses, will be interesting to see it play out 👍🏻

So there we have it, engine is in.
NOTE !!!! In 2005/2006 Subaru decided to change the trigger wheel and cam gear on any of the engines used such as the ej253. This meant ignition and fuel timing was wrong. So using the older style trigger wheel and cam gear from an ej16 and ej201 we have a running engine.
A quick test drive shows considerable torque and power increase, with the AFR values relatively stable, did not get a chance to closely monitor them as was only a relaxed test drive to ensure nothing was loose/ damaged.
Will be using the monitor mode on the HKS AFR and will inevitably make changes here and there.
 
UPDATE!!!
After installing the engine I took the car home for a couple of evenings to let it stretch its legs. After some monitoring of the AFR on the open road, noticeable changes needed to be made to the fuel trims using the HKS unit. Once we had adjusted it through all 11 RPM ranges she really began to sing.
Large torque increase with a noticeable increase in power up top. Would ideally like to book the car for a dyno session to verify numbers and readings, curiosity would be getting the better of me 🤣
The car itself is running a 4.11 final drive ( with upgraded parts such as LSD’s to be installed over winter), so acceleration is fairly nippy and the car handles very well around bends.
I have also acquired an ez30r so let’s see where things go from here 🤣🤣
 
Another Update:
The stock ECU cannot be re-flashed too easily in a 1.6, which is needed for an engine swap.
I purchased a Speeduino No2c to run as a piggy back setup in conjunction to the standard ECU allowing me to keep the ancillaries and immobilisers active while being able to map the car which ever way I want.
Currently have a 3D printer working away to make a casing, once finished I’ll be wiring it in and beginning to work away at perfecting the correct map ( thank god for ROM-Raider ).
The reason I didn’t splash a boat load of money at an advanced piece of equipment such as a Link or Haltech is simple, the engine merely needs the most basic functions and a way to map.
Will update as we go 🤙
