Guy in work bought a 2001.6 A4 today. had a quick look over and its mostly good apart from a bit of dodgy pipe work in the engine bay. can someone help me identify this pipes and where i can source replacements?

So in the pics above, going from left to right:

first rubber sleeve looks like is patching up part of this pipe, needs to be replaced.
The 2nd area looks like it has a bit of white plastic piping patching something up but the top and bottom of the hoses are totally disconnected from each other.
This valve of some kind is covered in oil and leaking too. They are look like either breather pipes or oil vapour return, the car is throwing the following codes:

17831 - Secondary Air Injection System; Bank 1: Insufficient Flow
P1423 - 35-00 - -
More info - http://wiki.ross-tech.com/wiki/index.php/17831/P1423/005155

17811 - EGR System: Regulation Deviation
P1403 - 35-10 - - - Intermittent
More info - http://wiki.ross-tech.com/wiki/index.php/17811/P1403/005123

Anyone know if the picture and parts highlighted below are linked to the error codes?

Any advice will be appreciated, Want to help him get it right since he is pretty clueless when he comes to cars!

That's the crank case breather pipe
They come as one part.bit a pain to fit the bottom piece into the block.

Your first fault is defo that problem, it's taking in too much air from outside.
Egr's don't give problems on them 99% of the time.

Pm your chassis number I'll get a price on it in the morning.
I'd say we have them on the shelf.
Any other questions pm me I'll sort you out.
Im a closet vag pervert don't tell anybody

so the two highlighted areas on the left are both the breather pipe? Some arse hole decided to try and use a bit of plumbing waste pipe to patch the 2 bits together, thats what the white bit is! is the EGR valve in that picture at all? i thought it was the thing i circled on the right? or there was another cround copper thing further to the left out of the picture that might have been it too, sitting just above the manifold?

Ill pm you a pic of the vin plate.

Good man!

you aint seen nothing yet if you think plumbers tape is bad.
ive seen it all with those pipes, i wouldnt but they are cheap to buy and always available in vw/audi.

the black plastic part on the right is a "Y" valve and not the egr

replace the crank breather pipe, clean the throttle body and do basic settings.
erase faults and i would say you will be sorted.

is the engine light on?

no engine light on that i saw, i can check again in the morning. How much roughly you talking for that part?

what a pain in the hole piece of pipe to swap! had to drop the alternator and mangle your arms in under the intake manifold.

Thanks to Grahamo for sorting me with the parts!
