The ordinary person will be hurting a lot more when our country is bankrupt.

I kind of agree with you.

Cuts have to be made somewhere, and it is going to effect a lot of people.

Personally I think that the public sector should get cut before childrens allowance though, with the exception of the emergency services.
According to the C.S.O. the average wage in the public sector is a lot higher than the equivalent in the private. Everybody knows that the public sector is very in-efficient and they use unions to to carry weak/lazy workers

Signed.

I pay the tax that keeps this country going. So does every single person on the forum....
How can the govenment decide to not give this back to us just because they f%^ked up.....
I know how difficult it is for 2 parent families to raise children never mind a single parent..... Colm I take my hat off to you man.... Fair play

Im due my first Child in December and lets just say Im startin to think about movin abroad the way this government has the country

Agreed , way over paid and do jack sh*t

Worked for my local county council and couldnt believe the attitude to work in the office

no rush on anything and all drawing massive wages , and all still have there jobs

So the government wants to save a sh*t load of money.....
Heres what they need to do..... They need to employ a group of people, These people need to look thru the books and find the thousands of people that have been living off benefits for years and that have never had a job. they need to cut the amount of money these people are getting. Now I dont mean people who genuinely cant get a job or have been workin for years and suddenly found themselves without a job.... I mean "Percy" that lives at the bottom of the street thats been on benefits / dole for years and has never looked for a job. The type of person who's kids have the latest runners, bikes, computer games etc and yet they only leave the house to go shopping or to the bookies.....
We all know the type of person..... these people need to be forced out into a job or drafted into the military somewhere....
They need to make money for the country and stop draining every cent they can out of the governments pocket....
I know we all hit hard times and some of us loose jobs and stuff.... But its you and me that will suffer when this happens... The funds wont be there to help us look after our families for a couple of weeks / months till we get another job and get back on our feet. Why wont it be there? People Like "Percy" have been allowed to bleed the country dry for years and they still havent had BOO said to them....
Sorry for the rant but I dont see how the government can continue to charge everyone more and more tax and not make the likes of "percy" get off his arse.

*percy is a fictional person and you can substitute his name for any name you like*

I absolutely agree that the public sector should be at the top of the Q when it comes to cuts. An economy that spends anywhere near the amount we do on public services is destined to fail.

I know plenty of firemen, guards, paramedics nurses etc though and these generally are not the people who have benefited from the absolute waste of public money thats been going on for years. The comfortable county council workers as Tommy mentioned are bleeding this country dry with things like overtime, shift allowance, bonuses etc and they have all the time in the world to go about their jobs at a snails pace, finish early most days of the week, and all the while have a juicy pension to retire on when they hit 55.

On frontline, Pat Kennys new gig on rte1 last week, i was physically ill listening to the people from the public sector try to lay blame on the private sector for our money troubles. And threatening all out strike action if they pay, conditions etc are TOUCHED. How stupid can these people be?

Simple Answer: Our country is fcuked, borrowing 400million a week. You can debate all day what aspects should / should not be cut but realistically the government wont listen to petitions like the one above because if we dont pull ourselves out of this, there wont be a country anymore.

its not as simple as saying all public servants should take a pay cut. the "average" wage they take home is everyone in public service counted and averaged, including TDs who are overpayed and the average employee who processes claims for single families/disabled/unemployed, etc who come out with only an average wage. ordinary public servants have been hit hard enough already with a pension levy on top of the income levy and its narrow-minded and unfair to say they all should take further cuts.

yes, those above a certain limit should contribute more but it has to be fair.

I see what your saying Dave and thats fair enough, but the attitude of striking if anything is touched is laughable. Imagine god forbid you wrap your car around a tree and it takes the emergency services an hour to get there because half of them are on strike? afaik there was nothing in the McCarthy report about cutting wages in the public sector, it was about cutting jobs. So no longer will we drive by a group of 5 council workers standing around a hole in the ground that two of them dug, killing time to go on lunch. My heart bleeds for them. On the politicians side of things, imo the Dail should be slashed down to a bare minimum, with whoever is left taking a huge pay cut aswell.

couldnt agree with u more. there are plenty of areas where job cuts can be made. many people judge public servants as one group, looking at someone at lower end of scale on 21500 before taxes the same as cowen on 150k plus. my missus is at the lower end of the scale, genuinely works hard and is killed with levies and tax.
