Anybody working with the ESB?

Does anyone here work with the ESB/Bord Gas/Airtricity etc?

If so can I pass a few questions by you regarding connecting to the mains. (Don't worry, not going to try it myself )

Cheers,
Graham

I got an answer I think.

Was looking to see if only the ESB did the physical connecting to the main network.

Just sussing out options as we want to run a cable underground to a house. All mainly just incase the insist that they want it above ground. Will be going near a window so is a bit of an eye sore.

Heard that it was only the ESB that will do it.

When i built my house a few years back i had to bury the heavy inflexible conduit myself.I think it had to be nearly a metre underground. So it had to run from the nearest agreed pole(they usually have to stand a new pole)right into the junction box of the house(where they read the meter).Oh and dont forget to run a very strong nylon rope through the conduit as i nearly forgot. All the ESB will do is pull the cable through the conduit and connect you up.Hope this helps!

Cheers Gonzo.
If you don't mind me asking, what did they charge you to do the lot? (Can PM me if you like).
Was your house a new build?
Did you have to pay a contribution fee?

This is one that was levelled, so paid them to disconnect it, but looking to be connected again. Hoping that we don't have to pay contribution fee's and just pay for the physical labour and materials to connect.

Cheers for the pointed about the conduit and rope.

It's nearly ten years ago now. They used to charge 800 punt per pole they stand for you.Now i think it just a flat fee regardless how remote you are.Price is gone up though to i think near 2000 euro(i could be wrong).

There is a pole already there, so should not have to pay for that.

Suppose the best bet is to see who they send out and see what they think.

Cheers

I know they where looking for €1000 to move the mains box on a house we where renevating. They also insisted that it had to be outside. Told them to get stuffed.

Ya, have heard that they insist on having it to the front(ish) of the house also so that they can read the meter easier. Not allowed have it behind gates etc.

I'd say it is really up to what kind of a person they send out. They could be a decent thoughtfull fella that will help put it in a good place that will not take from the house, or else it could be some numpty who doesn't give a sh*t and will want to get as much money off you for doing the least work possible.

the reason for it being to front of house is to stop any suspision of taking anything all ducting works must be carried out by owner like said above rope in duct with hockey stick turned up cavity to meter cabinate.

It is possible to bury the cable but the feckers hate pulling the rope thru the ducting (One crew i had dealings with broke the rope on 4 houses on purpose) lazy shits ,

The pipe has to be layed on pee gravel or sand base , then the esb ducting is rolled out into the trench and a warning tape placed on top , further pee gravel or sand is then placed to cover the ducting , then backfill trench with excavated material or suitable road base material if its under your drive way or paths , as ker said use a hockey stick to bring the wire up the cavity of the wall ,Make sure to place the pull thru rope in the duct or they wont look at it ,

Generally the metre box is placed to front or a gable wall for ease of access when reading the metre for the bill to be calculated ,

As far as i can remember the cost is varied on each job due to the fact that no 2 jobs are the same
