Had a look at an 08 Audi s8 v10 today in Dublin.
Amazing car , full Audi history 60,000 miles 1 owner
My god it's just relentless with the power

Downside I spotted oil leaking on driver side under engine tray .
Also got home and had s8 keys in my pocket , ur man rang me freaking out ..dropping them back in the morning .

Don't know what to do here , get car on ramp to see what is leaking and buy as seen or walk away.
I was walking away and didn't mention leak but now I've to drop key back I'm having second thoughts

It's not often a 1 owner s8 comes up with 60k and Audi history

€140,000 new 10 years ago , could be got for €20,000
 
Heart rules the head!!! Dangerous territory with a 10 year old big engined Audi!!

My suggestion would be to ask seller to get a full vehicle health check in a main Audi dealer that deals with this type of model on a regular basis!!

Or else you book one, it’s cheap... take for test drive to said dealer. Book the car in waiting for VHC.
An hour tops!

You then get the full report of the vehicle for yourself.


When I see high end cars like that I always think......

“Fur coat, no knickers”!!!

Easy to buy..... hard maintain... really hard!!

Fcukin cracking cars though when minded.
 
I've had a a6 2.8 , a3 3.2 & s4 4.2 .
The a6 and a3 caused zero issues the s4 broke me .
Hence buying e39 530d 3 years ago for 2k which had been bulletproof

I miss that s4 and it wasn't my smartest buy with little history .
I will put that to dealer 2moro , get a report and go from there

Gonna look at an e60 m5 , maybe hold out for a decent 05/06 e46 m3 which would probably be best investment

They all have there issues m5 with rod bearings m3 subframe cracks
 
too risky avoid be my opinion
nice car we can all buy em but few of us can run em
and the truth is people who buy these dont run them out of there own pocket
when they get to this age there out of a working mans weekly wage and im sure if you wrote the figures down there is far better iconic cars you can get for your buck
as nice as the car is
depreciation , maintenance even aside from tax and insurance its a bad idea
throw your cash if you have it in too a JDM car and it will come back out again the otherside close enough too what you paid or by a M5 e34/e39 it will be worth mre down the line and cooler as the years go on , i know sligtly different to compare but thats the way i would go
e60 M5 yes but i would prefer the older more mechanical cars less to go wrong and i would personally think better residuals
that would be my 2 cents
or enjoy what you have and resist a urge that will most likely pass :icon_grin:
 
20k for an 2008 s8! are you mad! I had an 07 s6 which is the exact same engine more or less without the added complexities of the s8 body and air suspension.

They get boring very fast, mine had a full non resonated milltek system but they heatsoak very fast, and can be prone to carbon build up like a lot of big lump Audi's and nearly every time there is something wrong with the engine, the first step in the workshop manual is: "Step 1: Remove engine"(22 hours approx). They are nose heavy and dont really go around corners too easily!

Its still a 120k car with 120k car servicing costs.

If the s4 broke you, i would avoid the s8! It could be a gem, but what scared me was the smallest of things that fail can be very expensive repairs.


There is 8 o2 sensors. 6 of them require engine out to change! 10 plugs, 10 coil packs, 10 cylinders, Audi dealer wanted 550 euro for a normal service consisiting of oil and air filters!

They are easy to work on yourself mostly, but go into that eyes wide open and i would be wanting 6 month or so warranty for that money.

Also 1809 euro tax a year or 511 for 3 months! The performance doesn't match the cost in my opinion, be lucky to make 400 bhp in Irish fuel

They are comfortable cars that sound amazing with an aftermarket exhaust, but for me that wore off after about a year and i got rid of it before something major went on it.

The e39 m5 would be nice but to old to insure as daily & not old enough for classic.
E34 m5 will have classic tax and insurance but very hard find one clean

Jdm import would be great but vrt is unknown on most decent cars these days

Anyone any experience on a e60 m5 or any other suggestions as daily .
Only travel around 7k a year

As a daily runenr yeah they would be costly enough
E60 lots more to go wrong
Prices are rising on them to befair so youll get more than you pay for it back
but id say yearly bills would be colossal
A 535D with teh few bits done is a very capabale car without as much of the cost
What Dan done with the Lexus I think is the most affordable luxury driving you can get and with a V8
Prestige German cars as Dan pointed out can cost a fortune and the older they get the more parts need replacing
VRT on a JDM is a bit unknown alright but if you watched that unplanned trip to japan video in it the lads hit the nail on the head
were coming to a point were a lot of the JDM stuff will dry up for export so prices should rise and maintenance is minimum compared to the German stuff
Buy a Impreza S203 :dontknow:
 
Be careful with an e60 m5 as they give bottom end trouble and I'm sure Grahamo will confirm for defo about the v10 audi engines giving block trouble they're supposed to crack I read a few threads on piston heads forum.

Save your few euros lad and buy a Nissan GTR or a newer M3 or m4. Twenty grand for any kinda ten year old Audi is mental. And if it's leaking oil now that could only be the start of it not the end.

So dropped keys back earlier and pointed out oil leak and wanting to get it to Audi to do health check before purchase
Really I think it's dead in the water , he wasn't really up for that .

As in above posts I am a bit mad but not as mad as the last owner who lost over 100k on it
Then again more than likely it was nothing to them .

I won't buy a car like that unless I get it backed up with a main dealer warranty for at least a year
Might be 20k car but as I know would need a few grand aside for issues and a decent exhaust

Looked at an e60 m5 earlier and I will say no more on that , how these dealers with oil leaking , interior panels missing , water in boots ,filthy engine bays expect to sell cars is beyond me . Any high end cars I've looked at in this country are pure shite with little to no history over the years .

Probably gonna get few bits done to e39 , maybe a remap and hang onto it .
Something nice might come up on backroads.ie or something
 
As an example I went to look at 2008 a5 3.2 Quattro with 60k KLM's full Audi history
Drove to Dublin took car for spin and it drove well but as looked around car there was no way mileage was right.
Was gonna ring Audi dealer but I thought what's the point . Just a waste of a day driving to Dublin.
My da has a 2008 a6 tdi with over 350,000klms and it was in way better condition than that a5 !
 
Nice e46 m3 would be my choice last of the real m cars
And only going up in value in my opinion

E46 m3 is definitely a bulletproof investment

What really turned me of them was a video with the arse falling out of it .
The subframe cracks on them , and very hard to see .

They're 100k cars new for a reason. More maybe? My old regional managers poxy A7 tdi cost €124k.

You're looking at 2k for brake discs. 12 spark plugs. 10 or 12 litres of oil.

These cars may depreciate, but maintaining them stays the same, if not more expensive as they get older.

That's just stating the obvious .
When I purchase a car I am factoring the running costs.
I wouldn't have wasted my time looking at it if I taught I couldn't afford run it .
Brake discs are not 2k
 
What about an AMG? I’ve had everything from sti type r’s to an e60 m5 and including 2 e46 m3’s. I’ve had my cls55 amg now well over a year (longest car I’ve owned) and would easily say, best car I’ve ever had.
Easy enough to work on, parts surprisingly aren’t that expensive and will over power 99% of cars on the road in unbelievable comfort.
Mine has basically every extra and a few mods which makes it 585hp and 620lb/ft. Would eat an m5 and is better build quality, especially the engine and drive train.

My e60 m5 got a gearbox not long before I bought it at a cost of nearly 10k sterling because it selected 1st and 7th at the same time and destroyed itself
 
Lovely position to be in and wish you the best in your decisions. All I'd say is buy what you want, you've a bit of homework done and seem to be factoring in the running costs also. I wouldn't let the general opinion of a forum away what car to buy, it's nice to hear a bit of advice and all but at the end of the day it's your money and your choice.

Either way we want videos of what we you buy at full chat, can't beat a big V8 or V10

No personal experience owning one but interested for sure. I was watching videos on maintenance/ownership costs on the E60 and the E55 AMG recently. According to the video on the E60 M5 "11k USD on repairs for 10 years." E55 AMG seems to be a reliable car as well, assuming you buy both with proper service history.

My opinion: If this is your dream and you'll try to avoid being too strict on finance, go for it. I'd love to ignore numbers and buy an M5 or M6...Now if you sit down and dig into numbers, I don't think these cars make sense in Ireland. Reasons: 1-Motor tax rates are insane, 2-Potential insurance costs (depending on your history and company, it could be OK or a big problem), 3-Maintenance costs and headache finding specialised garages for this type of cars, 4-Performance: 0-60mph on the E60, S8, E55amg is not dramatically better than a STi (we pay "only" 710 yearly vs 1809 on those cars) and you'd only notice substantial difference at silly speeds (160 kmh+) which could get us in serious trouble here. In 5 years you'd have dropped almost 9k on tax alone. I'd only touch those cars when classic insurance becomes an option, so that financially it "kinda" makes more sense, otherwise I'd try newer cars with similar performance around 30k by now (VW Golf R with Revo remap is a serious car...Sub4 sec 0-60mph, Audi S3, BMW 335D (F30), Cupra300, etc. and much better motor tax, fuel consumption and overall ownership costs in Ireland.
