Anyone know much about the above, do they give much trouble, nice to drive, expensive to repair? What's it like with the shifting on d wheel? Cheers lads

i know lots! i have one! in relation to your questions!

they give much trouble its a subaru!

they are nice to drive its a subaru,

and they are expensive to repair its a subaru!

but seriously! they are great! if you dont mind the autobox! the shifting on the wheel is fine, if a little delayed! its like press....................shift so you have to anticipate your gear change and actually change before you need to, to get it to change at the right time!

the autos have 20 less horse power over the manuals! but have longer gearing on the final drive so in essence are more economical when on a motorway! marginally

they tend to run less boost too! about .7bar primary and .9bar secondary are the "factory figures", the manuals have .1bar more on each! but alot of the time they run the same,

thats about it really, most the rest is the same as the manuals!

but if you are wanting a B4, GET A MANUAL!!! especially if you intend to drive it properly! i took mine round the German Grand Prix Circuit and the Nurburgring and overheated the fluid on 3 occasions! not fun

Manual for real drivers
Auto for comfort and convenience (or people with only one arm)

I have pretty much the same opinion as goosie there. The delay in the change when you use the buttons or the stick is a bit annoying but you get used to it. The fact there's only 4 gears too means they are quite long aswell. I had a manual previously and 3rd gear worked so well in first turbo and of course when it hits secondary. 3rd gear in the auto is (in my not so expert opinion!), too long and there doesnt seem to be as much go int when you put the boot down. If you're in no rush, hold out for a manual

true that man! i find 3rd is just a bit to long, doing about 80 when on full boost, 2nd is CHUFFING fast but not long enough, and 4th............. your doing over 100 on secondary!

to me if it were a manual it would seem like the gearbox has 1, 2, 4 and 5, ie missing 3rd

yes that is true about the gear change a little bit slow compared to the likes of a lambo of ferrari!!!so i leave it in drive most of the time,it changes quicker anyway!slight delay in 3rd tho,but other than that there a nice comfy car and plenty enough power too,I never drove a manual legacy so couldnt compare but id say theres not a whole lot of difference if both cars a standard! its the first auto car ive ever owned, always had manuals, but have to say i never liked autos till i drove the legacy, was very empressed with all round performance and comfort espically if you have kids!!!
