As you all remember the video i had of the crazy lad smashing up my neighbours BMW im looking to get an automated system for recording my car at night. I was usuing my Panasonic HD camcorder lately and its just hassle having it on the window sill and only records about 7 hours at a time, quality is goos though so im looking for a decent camera that connects to a DVR and records 24/7 and also the option to log into camera and view online.

Camera quality at night is my main concern, area is pretty well lit with street lights. If any of the lads on here can supply me with some decent gear it would be great. i could get away with 1 or 2 camera's and a DVR box without hard drive as i have a few spare lying around.

Im thinking something like this:

with this:

If anyone could recommend some good gear to look at, let me know.

Where are you based and what sort of budget would you have in mind? Maplins stuff is sh*t (excuse the french) and the likes of ebay stuff is not worth installing even if you get it for free. Theres quiet a few options open to you...let me know the budget and il point you towards the best value for money

300-450 ish is all i want to spend, probably need a vary focal lense so i could zoom it in a bit to where my car is parked

The lens doesnt control the zoom like a good dvr will zoom to some extent but it wont zoom a lot. The varyfocal lens means the shorter the focal lenght, the wider the view and the longer the focal lenght, the narrower the view. For example a 8mm lens would be like looking down a toilet roll holder it focuses on a particular image and is very clear. And say a 2.5mm lens would look at a broad view but the focus would be crap(and if a spider craweled on the camera it would look the size of a dinasour!) To sum it up, i would suggest 2 cameras, one lookin at you car and one looking at the area (garden). The main factor of CCTV is light-the brighter the area the better, as when an image is recorded it looks worse than a live view. I would suggest 2 x infared bullit cameras ran back to a DVR recorder. If your about dublin i can give you a couple of places to go and you will get the best prices available if it helps. Id say 600-700 euro would get you the 2 quality cameras and a DVR. Check out the link below at an image of a bullit and if your interested il get you a good deal just let me know

Garreth.

i think 1 camera would be fine since my apartment is up on the 3rd floor, the distance for the the window ill be mounting it at to me car is about 15 metres, if any of the camera lenses can come with an optical zoom that would be best. No prices on that borsatec website so not much use.

Might be handier just to use my camcorder and have that recording back to dvr box.

Yes if you have a camcorder thats fine but a bullit system with DVR, you will not need to change disks as this is all automatic. Borsatec bullit is about 100 quid. Whatever system you decide on give me a shout and il advise you on installing it mate

vandel proof day/nite dome camera is about 160 euro inc vat, a half decent 4 channel dvr is about 400 euro, which im sure you could upgrade with ease to have a higher capacity.
as said above the stuff in shops like maplins is not up to much and somewhere like borsetec, northwood or reliable security will supply you with decent professional gear.
if using your camcorder to feed your dvr you will need an analogue output on the camera like an rca or bnc.
