Cost of imports...are they stone mad or am I missing something?

Hello, been a lurker here for a few days now, seems like a great site and a friendly bunch!

As you'll guess from my username I'm a VAG man at heart but I think it's time for something nice. I was given a spin in a classic a few weeks ago and it re-ignited my love of the brand. And I wanted something that will burn a ridiculous amount of petrol in a very short space of time...

Anyway, been trying to look at costs like insurance (grrr and stuff to that) and to what car may suit my budget. I've been looking at the classifieds here, dungdeal, autotrader in the UK and this morning at importing a car from Japan myself.

Am I missing something? These prices are pre-VRT, tax and whatever other charges our government have invented recently. I, probably, mistakenly assumed that a classic or bugeye would be landed here for a bit less that these prices, in my head, 40-50% less. So again...am I missing something?

Good cars will cost .

Rust buckets can be had for considerably less .

Demand is on the rise for these cars again so prices will rise .

And I have no problem paying for a good car (supposing I have the money), just assumed that Jap imports would work out a bit cheaper.

Mate of mine thought the same when looking for a skyline . Let's just say he got a rude awakening but had to pay to play .

Second hand good cars are scarce over here no doubt .

It's not a straight forward job to get a scooby

I'm getting a similar rude awaking :banghead::icon_grin:

No not as straight forward as expected but nothing worth having come easy :smokin:

Vrt or revenue seen to pull any number they want

Only country in the EU to pay an illegal tax too

Don't want to think about that and I'm sure the swear filters wouldn't like to hear my thoughts on this :angry1:

sold my type r v limited version 5 few days back for 10k
didnt have it advertised
they just simply are not about and plenty of lads looking

If your concerned about the budget involved in buying one ,you'll cry when ya figure out the running costs budget .

Well aware of the running costs. I only do 5-6k a year so that side of things is OK. I know of what you mean though and am not walking into any purchase blind. I always do me due diligence when making a move, just as I say, budget isn't stretching to what I thought it might have

Pity

As said buying budget is the least of your worries with cars like these :)

Even if you only do small mileage a year the modifying bug will hit even though you swear to yourself it wont. You will end up wanting it louder, faster etc and things just add up not to mention they are complete alcoholics and insurance can be a nightmare. But having said that they are 100% worth every penny. I have driven evos, high powered bmw's, my current DC5 which is amazing but theres just something about a nice subaru that words cant describe until you own one and find a good road

Best of luck on your search

Im at the tail end of getting my bug the way I want it, well I tell myself tail end. And you don't buy a Subaru to save money, that's the gods honest truth. I do similar milage to yourself, have a love for jap cars and a bigger love for scoobys. Noone on here would ever tey turn you off a Subaru (especially if youre coming from a turf burning vagmobile) but you gotta be aware of the costs once landed.

If you can afford it then do it! Smiles per miles are the most important factor.
