ANyone know how the likes of UPS calculate their charges on stuff ordered form the US? I ordered a camera lense from US and UPS guy wanted 105 before he would give me the package. Lense cost about 550 USD is there a certain value that once you go over you have to pay customs duty?

thought it was like vat, ie 21.5% could be wrong though :ponder:

Seems a bit steep , think its based on market value of the item over here plus the vat

My brother paid fair few quid on a body kit he imported from america a few years back that he wasn't expecting :wall:

Dan

Ask the company shipping the item to mark as birthday present....
Have done it a few times and most places will oblidge....

That figure sounds about right, i dont know what the criteria is but i paid 50euro on a set of lights that cost just over 300 euro a few months ago. So its in or around 20%

But whats the deal with ups taking the money do they give it to revenue?

ye that sounds about right dan anything not bought in the eu is taxable at 20% or there abouts . i get all my tools from the states and have to pay it .it still works out cheaper than buying here it .dhl are the only lads that never charged me duty .also pay the duty by cash or cheque dont give them your credit card number cos if you bring any more stuff in with them they'll just use your card again it's happened to me :angry1:

ye its seems to have worked out roughly at 20-21 %. just wasn't expecting it and didnt have any cash to hand to pay for it, so had to bum the money off a few lads in work! Still worked out cheaper than the rip off irish camera places!

Did you get a receipt?Unless dhl clear all items themselvrs :dontknow:Amount would be about right.

Customs usually write advising charges about 2 days before delivery.

:smokin:

i got an invoice upon delivery. only ordered it on Monday evening and got it this morning! not very much detail on it!

It's 21% vat + 9% import duty and it's on the price of the item and the cost of shipping:

item+shipping=? +vat+import duty=?

And that's all down to the goverment nothing to do with usps/dhl/ect.....
And there is no min amount any more

Had the same thing a while ago and looked right it to it .
Sucks huh

hope that helps all the same

makes sense , so UPS collects on behalf of government or pays on your behalf and then collects the cost from me? I used the same company and delivered with UPS on monday , only 150 dolla worth and no customs duty, so there must be a cut off value you can get away with?

It's luck of the draw m8 ..... I've had 300dollors up worth of kit via usps and dhl with no charge and same with charge, Radom checks on imports :dontknow:

I got my D80 a couple of years ago via UPS from hong kong, wanted 80quid tax on it,was roughly 20% as well, its annoying but what can you do,i try to only buy my camera stuff from within the EU unless its as cheap as say memory cards of filters, got 2 UV filters from china during the week only 30e so they didnt look for any tax.

Everything is so cheap in Asia/USA for electronics-no fair:(
