Defense forces - Navy.

Thinking of joining the defence forces lately. Navy in particular looks interesting to me ATM. Anyone here in the defence forces at the moment?

Be good to get some first hand experiences before I make my mind up. I'd love an apprenticeship in a garage but what are the chances of that these days? Even if I was lucky enough, the amount of places closing up etc and lads that have had their apprenticeship on hold because they've to then go and find another garage to take them on to finish it.

I've also a love of woodwork and carpentry. Wish I'd taken up metalwork and engineering to go along with it in school!

Hey, I was in the Defence Forces twice, both times as an Artillery solider, and to be honest, the army has gone to f**k lately.

That is the reason I left and nearly every person I know in the army has left, many with upto 30 years service., I only left the 18th Jan this year

Now I am not by any means saying it wont work for you, I am just telling you what I have experienced.

But the Navy could be different, but I dont think it is.

Best thing to do would be to go onto Military.ie and get some info or email navy.manpower@defenceforces.ie

But as far as I know, the Defence Forces is not Recruiting again for at least 2-3 years

The UK may be an option, or the PSNI? Lots of apprenticeships available.

I was looking into the RAF when I was 18 and there was something that didn't allow me. I think I have to be a resident/working in the UK for 3 years first.

Edit: Nope, Irish citizens are permitted to join the royalnavy but I can't due to asthma and having inhalers prescribed to me within the last 4 years.

Fcuk joining the British army, more than likely you'll have to go to war. Bollox to that.

Well Ireland has been asked to join NATO. For the size of our waters, our defense forces are shíte.

I know but you won't be expected to go to war and have your legs blown off. Off to some desert where everyone hates you and has an IDE waiting to maim or kill you?
No thanks Irish soldiers do a great job and help people out, the casualty rate in the Irish army is relatively small, the amount of amputees coming out of Afghanistan is horrendous.
Just my opinion on it I've talk to a few British soldiers and it sounds like a poxy job.....lets not forget it is a job, you have a life to live no point shortening the odds for someone else's benefit when your getting crappy pay and living in desert.

Aye. Don't want anyone thinking I love the queen and what not. :D

2 of my friends in the navy, don't complain about their job any more than anyone else, good job and great further training opportunities once your in.

i wouldn't mind any of that, think about yourself. going to war is poxy unless your fighting for a just cause, helping imperialists line their pockets is not my idea of a worthy cayse

It's not the going to war side, but with Royal Navy that's most likely a given. It's the getting away and getting to play with mechanics and equipment that I want.
