Diff/Gearbox oil change

Hi Everyone,

My gearbox/diff is low on oil. Diff seals were done as part of the underbody job but oil wasn't changed or topped up at the time. Slight whine starts at around 60kph. 1st and 2nd gear is a little stiff too. Had intended on getting all fluids done as part of the service coming but worried about the diff/gearbox.

I'd do it myself but I can raise it high enough to do it and I can't guarantee it being level.

Might anyone be able to assist or know of someone local to Cork area that could help?

Thanks.

Stick a length of garden hose with a small funnel into the gearbox dipstick pipe yoke and top up from There👍👍

There's no dipstick on it. Tis a fill at the side and stop when it dribbles out job.

Not on a hatch 🤦‍♀️ there’s no dip stick but all before there is
Between the turbo and the gearbox yellow stick

75w90 oil 5L for the gearbox 0.75 for the rear diff

Well that's lesson 597 of Subaru ownership learned, don't believe anything online 😂. As stubborn as I am, got up out of the bed and went to check with a grin on the face quickly followed by the 'Jesus I'm thick'. She's no where near level so ill have to wait until tomorrow to check. Cheers lads.

Yup, as above, dipstick under intercooler. Drivers side I think.
Also, for rear diff. Crack the fill plug before the drain plug, you don't wanna drain it and realise the fill plug won't budge 👌

Thanks everyone for the help. Front box is ok on oil. It was just on the L mark so added some in to bring it above half way between the two marks.

Did the drain on the back, to say it was low was an understatement. I can't imagine the rear diff has ever been serviced. Filled it up getting 750mls into it.

After a short drive and a longer drive, whine/hum is still there as before the change. But other symptoms I was hearing like crunchy gears and complaints on deceleration after load have now gone. I can now nail the hum source to the back though.

I've done a weave test on a drive to see if a wheel bearing might be causing it and the whine isn't always there as far as I can hear. Any other way I can check bearings without ripping down to them just in case it is?
