Petrolheads
right the story is i tried in vain to get my car into couture to get it serviced but the lad who was to pick me up while i drop off the car was unavailable so today havng bought the kit when i first got the car i decided to change the plugs.......holy crap what a job . the nearside plugs were the hardest, had to remove the water bottle and the battery. on the other side i had to remove the airbox and disconnect two pipes with what i think was coolant......was a green colour.
tomorow im goin to do the oil......providing in can get a filter. the car was supposed to have gotten a full service prior to me picking it up but i think only the oil and airfilter were changed and the air filter is new but is a spurious type. the plugs were in bits, and were definatley not changed since it came to this country.
is there anything else i can do while i have the tools out to help keep it runnin sweet.

the clutch is ok.....i hope :p
ive heard speak of cleaning out solinoids and other such things on these engines that i havent a clue where they are. i really miss having access to a ramp cause i like to get under cars as much as get into them.

right lads i changed the oil today and it was a piece of p**s.......i had gotten the plugs and oil of renno ages ago but didnt have time to do it so i tried to get it over to couture but work commitments screwed that up. im kinda glad i didnt bring it over cause now i know whats ahead of me the next time and it should only take half the time.
as for the diff oils and gear box thats next so any advice is welcome. rootin around the engine bay i found a second dip stick  stuck in behind the intercooler so i reckon thats the gearbox dipper. its showing half full so i want to get in and do that next. i had a look at the diff and theres two lugs so i presume the lower one is for draining and the upper is for filling ;) so what oils do i need for this, is there a specific type and can anyone recomend some. the only problem i have is getting under the car, i have axel stands but i much prefere to get this stuff done on a ramp so i might go to couture for this....for some reason i have a fear of the car fallin on me :eek:mg:
also whil rootin around under the back axle i found a cable commin out of a grommet on the lhs of the boot over the exhaust, it was cut on the inside and came right out when i pulled it. the outer black springy sheeth is still there and i pushed it back up into the bodywork to prevent it snagging. i cant access where it is in the boot, somewhere below where the jack goes so does anyone have any ideas.
btw the handbrake and the bootpull still work so its not them.

the gearbox and diff oil i use is castrol syntrax.
the rear diff is easy, just like you said.
cant remember how to drain the gearbox, i guess thers a nut, but you refill in the dipstick.
thats what i did anyways

you need to look over the suspension also and make sure theres no play in wheel bearings, steering rack, drop links etc......
more to a service than changing oils and plugs!!!!!

Some files attached below...
This is for a B4, right?
Did you think about changing the coolant? I changed mine last week for Motul inugel and some Motul Mocool additive. Takes about 7 litres.
Water temp is now slightly cooler :)
You could change the fuel filter too but it's located in the tank and quite difficult to get at!
Part numbers for that are: 42072AE000 (filter element), 42025AE030 (gasket seal) and 42025AE020 (O-ring)
Good luck with the rest of the service!

yeah marko i checked the bearings and looked at the bushings and droplinks, there is a squeek in the rear and i think its the bushings on the anti rool bar but they look intact so ill get some rubber lubricant and give them a spray, had a look at the discs and pads and theres a few mile left in them. also checked the levels and greesed the usual spots :p
@ doc......how do you fill trough the dipstick.......its way down under the ic? i didnt get far enough under the car to look at the gearbox propperly so i dont know if you can fill it from down there. i think i might start a blog.......was putting it off cause im not doin major mods but theres a lot to be done in the upkeep and it might be usefull.

fair play lad

a bit of satisfaction for yourself instead of payin for someone else to carry out the service
has the car had a timing belt up to now???

yeah i allways serviced my last car....more often then i probably needed to. the garage told me the car had been serviced but i only have it a few months and the oil was dead black and the plugs hadnt been changed cause they were in a jocker too. ill be looking at doin the timing belt soon and ill deffo not be doin that. i want to get some new pulleys also when thats been done so ill be on the look out for some trick ones and im thinking about an induction kit before i get it mapped cause when i had the airbox out yesterday doin the plugs i noticed they way it goes into the wing and turns back on itself toward the intake.......i could get a nice kit in there i thought

mine is just to the left of the i/c.
we used the castrol can, theres a long nossel on it, so it was easy enough.
there mite be another way...not sure...but thats what we did.

yeah i was thinkin it was some sort of funnel, where can you get the gear oil you mentioned?

halfords were the cheapest round here, thinks it was around 15euro for it.
not sure how much you need but i got two of them.
the lads here mite no how much to put in.
same stuff i used in my diff

fair play ill be up there tomorrow on the way home from work so ill get it then.
i have to get some gear oil for the saxo so its all good

well with the rear diff, empty it with the bottom nut and fill in the top nut, till its full. (coming back out).
with the g.box just check the levels.
this is what iv done and had no problems.

yeah was just lookin at the service documents posted by johnjoe and it says to fill via the gauge so ill have to invest in a long funnel or similar. i wouldnt mind spendin a day with a good mechanic that knows there subarus. i worked in the trade for a few years in the parts dept but i tried to spend as much time out on the ramps as i could. if it were possible ied take an apprenticship tomorrow . thank god for this forum, theres allways good sound advice available

id only be watching the lads at my car, otherwise i cudnt change bulb in it.
see them do it once, easy enough to do yourself after.
i wouldnt chance anything major tho, dont like gettin my hands dirty :D
