so ,"a mate " (wink wink) of myne is thinking of buying a golf-R mk 6/7/7.5 . i know there are current and previous owners (+knowledgable feckers) on here so said id ask . Quite a deer piece of kit in my eyes but most reviews of them are similar ,power/handling very good but feel is bland/boring. im jus wondering and advice or anything tol ook out for .

A45 are same money now aswell

If getting a Golf R get a fresh in from Japan with no rust id guess

Great car mac, you will have no regrets.despite what all the haters will say out there and there are alot of golf r haters out there.

the ea888 engine pulls hard to the redline and imo best all.round practical hot hatch out there. Great handling.

Simple flash of ecu and you have 350 bhp easy with no supporting mods needed, AP told me the golf r are one of the best responding cars to a remap, cheap to Insure also.

Why did I sell mine? I don't know actually 🤣 but I just wanted a jdm impreza but would love another golf r as a daily.

Make sure water pump amd housing is replaced and if a manual one the clutch WILL go of remapped as they use the gti manual clutch in the manual R.

If you go jdm gold r just know they are limited to 280bhp and would need a remap to unleash full power but you would probably remap regardless for Irish petrol

Do it you won't regret it.

Howdy Ross, I'm pretty sure a pal of Gordon's has one. It's a serious machine, I don't think you'll regret ever buying one. The pull on them is unreal.

That's actually Pedro's old car, they tick the boxes for a modern car as in tax and performance but I don't like the drive it's too easy to drive fast and you end up doing speed unknown til you look down at the speedo.
@mac mac you've had a golf for the last few years so have an idea what they're like and I think it would be a cool car for you. I'd prefer an M2 I know it's about twice the price but same tax bracket but my crazy brain always stretches too far and wrong 🤣

How would you compare the R and the i30N @Pedro555
Just curious.
Out of the two, I'd almost prefer the N
But everyone has different preferences etc that light blue N is the modern hot hatch for me 👌👌

I30n like a big go kart, great drivers car and serious fun, another car i shouldnt have sold🤣, only criticism is engine runs out of puff at 5k whereas the R pulls very very hard to redline.

Totally agree m2 if funds allowed, they are class, would love one also but in a different price range to the R

Interestingly enough the man that did the ea888 also designed the amg 45 engine

As cool as the amg is , the golf is a bit less stand outish

I’d love a spin in both

Ross a golf r would suit ye

Go for it Ross, the buddy has one what a car to move..
The only downside is that you can get a diesel that's looks the exact same and you could get into a bit of trouble proving to clowns on the road that it's an R and not a diesel🤣🤣🤣

@ colm , a45 doesnt appeal to me tbh , i think they look like their too big for a hatchbach . i know they have the power but a no from me .
iv a dealer currently watching the jap market for an R in the spec im looking .

@pedro , yeah seems to be a bit of negative love for the R , im puttingit down toa jealousy angle . but i also think its more aimed at the driver than the car itself and how its driven/ sounds(popcorn). driving the bug with kaki the past 15+ years i think locals are well use to me,lol
good call about the EA888, as im still learning about them .

@ eoin yeah serious pull but for serious wedge of euro's

@ gordo "too easy to drive fast " i like this about them . sure why would you want hassle , lol. yes i currently have a 2010 GTD golf in 3 door that looks similar to the R andwith adownpipe and remap it does go but , but the awd and pull , the R looks like so much more ,and with a tweak ,job done .
m2 , waay out ofbudget ,plus i recently wet my toes in bmw ,and was a let down tbh (320 msport awd petrol)

i30 like the merc , no intrest .

@Baz currnt one suits me so same look but with loads more power/handling is my thinking .

at jonhhy currently have the diesel gtd ,that looks like an R (1 off paint job from factory im led to believe. good but want moreeeeeeeee

@Jarocki yes but no intrest , think i want a 3door and as feck all passengers in my life .

If it's a 3dr Golf r you are set on Ross & sounds that way...then hold out for the best example of the car you want....
You could try a different brand ,but then find yourself regretting not getting the Golf r....there will be no what ifs when you get ur desired car...
Just my 2c👍

People dislike the golf for one reason

It's usually the answer to any questions asked..

Great cars.

I'd agree tho boring compared to our old school mechanical cars that are brimming with personality but dosent take away from facts quick remap and enjoy or just enjoy.

Always have the bug there great 2 car garage my 2 cents.
