hey lads, made plans 6mths ago to save as hard and fast as i could to get the cash up and trade the wagon in for a jdm bugeye sti, i am a little over half way to achieveing this . But left the wagon in with a very good mechanic a couple of days ago to get full service and original downpipe back on for nct test which i had today, when i went to collect the wagon from the mechanic he told me that the head gaskets were on their way out and before i could ask how much the cost was he also told me that there was a knocking noise coming from the crank. He told me my options were to trade up asap or get a rebuild. Im absolutley gutted now because i had the car mapped back in may last year so i thought i was less at risk from this. Never drive the car hard and only use it for the trip to and from work. I need to make a decision quickly because i need transport for work and after my wife has seen the many thousands of euro gone into this car she is totally against me getting another subaru. I dont want to trade for another classic because ill be back to square one starting from scratch again so it looks like i might have to go for something more sensible. will make a decision in the next week or so and let ye all know, cheers, james

btw the wagon sailed through the nct this afternoon.

james. Get a second opinion from another Mechanic. If it's knocking slightly You might be safe at this stage and get away with a set of bearings which aren't majorly expensive. Labour is the highest cost.
But get it checked again by someone else.
My 2 cents.
Cheers
John

Stay on course with your original plan but but groud the wagon! Spent 200 or 300 on a get around car just to get you to and from work until you get your Bug eye! I beleave the bug eyes aren't as soft as the classic so cann't see you having to many problems in the future! :pray:

Do get a second opinion though! :thumbsup: :subaru:

thanks for the advice lads , @ john,dave, i trust the opinion of the mechanic, you two guys would know him too, he lives not to far from dunshauglin and he really does know his stuff,

no chance the car was brought out on the road by someone for a spirited run????? how does he know the head gaskets are on their way out????

@555scooby, the guy is driving an evo7, he is a sound bloke, the plugs he removed were starting to form rust on the tips of them, cheers.

@john, trade up asap, or if i thought the car was worth keeping consider a rebuild.

@alan thanks again mate. :thumbsup:

@jackswagon

yes we know him

i'd take his word too....................

prob no need for second opinion....... :cry: :cry:

just an update on this post, ive made up my mind to leave scooby ownership and try an evo5 for a year or so, will be hard to walk away from the scooby but im gonna try this just to see. just want to say thanks very much to all the lads who gave help and advice to me over the past year or so :clap: , ill continue with my forum membership cause no doubt ill be back in a scooby at some stage further down the road and dont want to miss out on all the goings on here, so thanks again lads,

james.

Sorry to hear you're leaving scoobyship mate, hope the problem hasn't put you off them. Might be worth pm'ing deco c though b4 you make up your mind, he only kept his evo5 for a few months after selling his scooby, he would be in a good position to give you a comparison

Best of luck James and dont be a stranger :thumbsup:
Id say you will like the evo had a rip i one very fast just found the cabbin to be a bit dull and savage grip.

All the best mate....you will be back sooner than you think...nothing is going to beat that FLAT 4 RUMBLE... :thumbsup: :thumbsup:

Best of luck with your new car!
I'm sure we would all be very interested to hear your comparisons :thumbsup:
Dan
