Hawkeye RX

Hey lads, new to this but I'm looking to move back to Subaru (used to own a new age diesel Impreza before she started going wrong[emoji16] ), but due to the way insurance has turned this year, my insurance co are refusing to insure me on anything turbocharged [emoji36] anyone have any advice on the Hawkeye 2.0 RXs? Are they as slow as I've been led to believe? Is there anything I should look out for as they age? Cheers in advance [emoji1]

I have a 2L 06 Hawk RX myself. Can't say they are extremely sluggish. Of course you will arrive a minute or two behind the turbo boys but you will arrive in comfort!

They are able to hold their own. They are very peppy for everyday driving and a brilliant cruiser for the motorway. Like any Subaru, just take care of it and it will treat you well. Just be aware for all the crap on sites like DD and adverts. Mine is a daily and it gets very good economy for the size of the engine. Would advise you to not go any lower than a 2L for a Hawk. That would feel a bit too slow.

I definitely won't be going 1.6 [emoji1] there's really some gorgeous blue RXs out there, and if they suggest 160bhp I can't imagine they'd be sluggish! I don't do huge milage so I'm not gonna complain about consumption, the missus can hold onto the diesel Skoda for the big drives [emoji12]

Here's my own one. Previous owner did the bonnet scoop. I lowered it and purchased new tyres and wheels. They take well to subtle mods. That's all you really need.

Used to own one 07 RX, so I will try to give you the best description of my experience.

Unline 00-05RX, this is DOHC engine, EJ207 running 160HP on 6400RPM - since there is no turbo and power is linear, at 7200RPM you will be getting 170hp, if everything is fine with the car.

It lacks the turbo boost at 3000RPM, and it will take quite long to build up the power, and you will want to keep them in high RPM in order to get the most power out of them.

It is by no means a slow car! We have done some spins over wicklow with WRXes, and I did manage to keep up most of the time, true, while I was full throttle, they were probably going half throttle, but on twisty roads, you will be able to keep up. On straight, WRX will probably eat you alive:)

If you keep the car on 3rd gear, which is where its happy and 3000rpm+ it will reward you with nice smooth and satisfying power output. You can do mountain roads hooning and be fairly safe as the car still shares tons of points from its racing brother, especially handling.

Getting to handling, thats something where hawkeye's shines the most, the steering wheel and feedback from it feels so good, power steering disables as soon as you hit 40kmh and you have full control over the car.

Now a few bad points about MY06+

All of the cars were equipped with Secondary Air system pump and two valves. All this system does, is pump fresh air into exhaust in front of catalyst, in order to speed up the catalyst effectiveness. Unfortunately, this system often gets moisture inside, which then results in rubber seals to get damaged, or rust building up inside, either clogging the pump, or blocking the valves from working properly.

Replacement of these parts is a joke, its hard to find them aftermarket, and subaru asks roughly 300e per valve and 400e per pump.

The WRX and STI owners solve this by reflashing their ECU, unfortunately RX ECU is non flashable, therefore the codes cannot be removed(at least wasnt at the time I owned RX).

Second issue with the car I had over the two years I owned one, was its sensitiveness to bad petrol. It was enough to take bad petrol once, and for three tanks, car behaved funny and between 2-3k rpm it was lagging, but then after 3k rpm, it started flying. This was caused by Knock sensor. Solution? Reconnect battery for 30 minutes to reset ECU after you drove the tank off. Prevention? Go to high grade quality petrol stations and avoid the cheapos.

Thats all bad things I know off. Outside of this, the car gave me bazilions of smiles per gallon, its savage car, a bit slow for some, but on other hand, there is no Turbolag, as soon as you tickle the throttle, the car goes with full power it has, and its by no means a slow car.

There's a couple of nice ones on DD, small bit high milage but I won't complain for the right car provided it drives right

3rd seems to be the spot alright. It's a head turner and with some subtle handling mods like springs and shocks, you can have a real blast. I have a Prodrive back box on mine so it has a little extra grunt (which my parents hate!). It's a pleasure to drive. As for the bad petrol issue. I'm dealing with this problem at the moment. From Zheiko he is telling me this is a known issue with all RX models.

It seems to sound like some problem a lash of dipitane won't fix? Have you tried changing the fuel filter?

Just changed the filter and the engine check and fuel low light came on so I had another go at doing it myself and I have everything connected fine. Just went to the dealer because the car is in limp mode but what I'm being told on here, is that it's a known issue and that I shouldn't worry. I have put some Dipetane into the tank before. I did help it a tad.

So to set the whole thing correctly, its actually not an issue, its there to protect the engine from detonations, all cars have thar, unfortunatelly, this ECU is kind of too sensitive to that and will trigger it more often

I told the garage to check everything was correct and clear the lights. Should have car back later.

Will do, don't let my problem affect your purchase. I did the filter myself so I could've done something arse-ways

Not trying to be funny but its easy to fit an inline filter backwards! Not saying you did or anything [emoji23] thanks for the advice lads [emoji122] [emoji106]
