Import Insurance

Sunday Drivers
Does anyone know where i can get insured off the chassis number?

Companies keep telling me they need the reg number to go ahead with insurance. :wall:

To get a quote you don't need the reg number, just year and exact model.

To get cover you do need the reg number, even if it is an import and not yet on Irish plates (they'll take foreign reg with chassis number in that case).

AXA do both and I just went through it with them a few weeks ago.

OH, and if they say they don't insure Impreza STI :nono: (they quoted me and then when went to take out cover 3 weeks later they suddenly stopped insuring them, despite about 17 years no claims and with them about 7 years)... go to AXA's website and get a quote, or quoteme.ie or the AA actually came out cheapest for a renewal for me. With those print outs in hand the local AXA office did give me cover in the end. :yellowthumb:

AXA straight up won't insure a Subaru Legacy GT.

First Ireland would not even look for quotes on chassis number or foreign reg (all other details provided too ofc). Its like they don't believe me.

Trying quoteme.ie now and see where i get.

Cheers

Hate to reply to myself but..

Quoteme.ie gave me a price of €904 (Aviva broker). So have to hear from them as to whether it will be valid or not.
123.ie gave me an online quote of €1246. Same as above really. They could just flag it and decline.

This is all on 5 years NCB too. Its not like I'm new to any of this.

Hoping i can save meself a few shillings in whats turning out to be a robbery(Thanks EU+Irish 'taxes').

EDIT: TO UPDATE

Quoteme.ie got back to me there. They've never heard of any insurance company covering anyone without a registration plate. Why she would not take the Japanese reg who knows.

thats who mine is insured with 2003 subaru legacy b4

They rang me back there, even though it said sorry we can't quote only to tell me no chance again once i said it was on Japanese plates.

Nice guys.

I'd like to add that they've refused me cover my whole driving life so no surprise there. :jack:

basically the irish insurance system is a joke , would a trade policy work to cover the car until its on proper plates

Looks like I'll have to get a transporter to lift the perfectly working car from the docks.

In this day and age....

Not only that, but will need a transporter to bring it to your local NCT centre able to assess and clear VRT (not all of them do) as well ! :icon_cry:

Still, there's plenty of people offering transport services at very reasonable rates. Recently got a jeep moved about 25 miles and cost me €75.

Unless you could find a mate, or friendly garage guy, who will lend you his trade plates.

Don't bother enquire about trade insurance; experience shows in general...
a) very dear
b) few offer it - and seldome to private individuals
c) even if you managed to go down that road, very hard to get rid of it and go back to private insurance (insurance companies tend to take a the view of: once a trader always a trader).

Offer Rob Spec C €50 to drive it from the port to NCT centre for you...he has it in writing from his insurance company that he can drive any car 3rd party even if its not currently insured elsewhere, as long as he is not the owner of said car :icon_biggrin:

Where are you based mate? I'm in Palmerstown. If you can pick me up and drop me home, I can go with you and drive it for you. I've fully comp on all 3rd party cars not owned by me. I'll show ya the Ins Cert if ya need. I've no pm access so call me on 0861552606 if ya want. I've a few weeks off work so I can go pretty much any time.

Most of us have the 3rd party cover on other cars on our policies, the problem is that the car is not registered :argh:

Oh, I thought we were joking, ha ha :icon_lol:

I couldn't do Monday as I have to be in work, are you not insured on any other car? Or do you know a mate who's a mechanic as they would have a trade policy and possibly trade plates?
