Importing/VRT question

I have my eye on a couple of cars up north and in the UK. If I was to decide to buy one of them, what costs have to be factored in other the the VRT and any potential travel or transportation expenses. Would there be any import duties or similar to be paid?

If I was to buy up north, what is the story with insurance? Will an insurance company give a temporary cover on a uk reg car to drive it home and until it's VRT'd or would it be best to have it trailered back and left until everything was sorted out?

Cheers

Prices are in sterling as I'm from the north. Flights can be dear as you're generally booking no more than 3 days in advance of flying. So £50 for that or thereabouts. Usually £10-20 for trains/taxi's if seller won't pick you up at the airport. Then depending on where you're travelling to and what the car is like on fuel will depend on how much the fuel bill will be. Usually the ferry is £110 if it's just turn up on the day. I usually travel on up to Scotland if the car is in the north of England or Scotland and go from Cairnryan as I wouldn't be bothered with the 8-9hr ferry from Birkenhead if the car is in England, if the car is in the midlands or south of England I'd usually go from Holyhead to Dublin and head up to Derry that way.

As for VRT and other taxes etc, it's not applicable to me so not too sure what way it works. Usually all in I factor £300 to get me there and home, including in food as well.

Thanks for the info lads.

Are there and VAG/Skoda mechanics on here? Looking for a bit of info about the cars I'm looking at.
