Re: Laptop with a serial port

im guessing its for alarm interface in which case usb - serial converters dont actually work.

USB uses a different power series and for some strange reason doesnt seem to work......

Marko: Checkout www.bigpockets.co.uk ya should be able to get a refurbished machine on there that has a serial port

Re: Laptop with a serial port

As Hammie said, Its for the alarms and the USB - Serial adapters are unstable.

I don't know if i'll bother sending it off to be fixed, the cost of shipping to the UK and back plus repair might not be worth it. But cheers for the link

Re: Laptop with a serial port

i have a few different usb to serial adapters you can try, is for use with the cliffnet software? once correct drivers for the adapter are installed it should work fine

Re: Laptop with a serial port

I've used them in commercial use(receipt printers and cigarette machines0 and never had a swap out , not for alarms but once you get the ini file correct telling the software what pins to use I can't see there being an issue..most triggers will only be 4 pins at most.
I have also used them for connecting a serial lead through rj45 port to create terminal sessions to cisco routers and switches ..can't imagine an alarm having a more complicated interface than IOS on a router.

Re: Laptop with a serial port

Marko: Whilst a USB - Serial converter doesnt work properly due to the way in which the USB power is handled maybe a PCMCIA - Serial converter may be the way forward if ya cant find a decent laptop with Serial port? Anyway check outh the like attached.... It might be worth a look if your stuck.... http://www.quatech.com/catalog/rs232_pcmcia.php

What happened to your current laptop that the serial port is no longer performing?

I don't know what happened to it that it stopped working.

I drop it in to Steve (HIWD) and he sorted it out. The lads a genius and saved me a fortune. Can't thank him enough for whatever he did to get it working again

Karma on the way Steve
