Legacy, tiptronic and awd system

Hi All,

Have had a quick look through the technical FAQ's and a search but cant seem to find what I want. Im hoping to buy a Legacy 99ish in the coming months. I would ideally like a manual, but I would really appreciate if someone can explain the tiptronic system to me, its good points and bad points and how it works. Ive also read the AWD is 60:40. For driving in snow etc, is there traction control that gives more power to the wheels that need it, or is it always 60:40. Finally, what sort of mpg should i expect in normal situations and towing a small boat? Have seen a few different figures from websites, but whats the "irish" mpg :)

Apologies in advance for these noob questions.

Thanks for looking,

regards,
James

Hello again james.
Afraid, the manual wagons are a bit rare at the moment. A few tiptronics on carzone.ie.
This is the facelift model after 2001 and it looks the biz. Dont know anything about the dealer.

is that above your budget?

As for the manual versus tiptronic thing, i drove the tiptronic and didnt like it at all. Changing the gears yourself still felt like an auto box.

I average about 25 - 28 mpg. Thats with a mix of town and distance driving with a wee bit of spirited accelaration too so not too bad i think.

Hope the search goes well.

The AWD system in the AUTO sends 60% of torque to the rear wheels, the manual is 50:50.
The auot is rated at 260 ps the manual is 280ps.
post may 01 the model was facelifted this is called the rev d model, it has stronger bottom end, bigger turbos and denso ecu.
Worth noting that the auto has smaller turbos as well but there is less vod(gearbox helps with this) and nick from couture autos did have an auto mapped safely at well over 300bhp.
Personally I would go for a manual you will find it easier to tune ,quicker and easier to re sell, on the flip side of that you will pick up an auto cheaper.

Excellent info lads, cheers. I am not in a huge rush to buy so will wait for the right manual transmission to come up and will spend more on it hopefully. Interesting to note the auto is 60:40 and manual 50:50, any reason for this? Maybe to give the auto box better acceleration?

I think it has to do with the size of the gear box and the position of the center diff trying to keep weight distribution even..I always thought this would be a good mod for the manual but I don't know what hassles are involved..might be as well fitting a 6 speed and dccd from a newage Impreza
