Letting membership lapse a month

I'm due up the end of this month, was debating leaving it sit for the month and just renew in Jan to have it run from start to end of year - any hassle doing that - ie I presume the new membership will start in Jan and not from the last renewal date?

Membership is a year from whatever date you sign up to membership
