lisbon treaty!!!!!!!!!!

I know nothing about this treaty as Im living in the States (home soon) so could someone post up the pros and cons for me?

Pro's - I don;t know the goverment are very secrertive about it

Con's - EU have more power over all countries, Irelands constitution is changed to allow changes to the EU constitution now and going forward.

President of EU would be one man, most likely Tony Blair, there would be an EU minister of foreign policy, if one country goes to war, who knows what happens??

All the people on the EU comission are nominated by their respective goverments not the poeple, meaning a president of EU would not be elected democratically. This I would not be happy about.

This exact treaty was shot down by other EU countries when it went to a public vote, they EU changed it so it was an ammendment to the existing constitution and therefore didn;t have to go to a public vote in other countries, such as UK. Only 2% of the original treaty was changed to allow this, meaning all of the peoples that declined it before got stiffed.

Ireland constitution changed to allow the EU have more power over us, could feck us on the corporation tax and other areas. Plus we have had British rule for 800 years, Irish rule for 90 odd, do we really want to give it up so quickly.

This is all what I, in my limited understanding have taken from it and I am open to correction

i thought going down the pub after work was a better option than voting :D

I'll second that

I personally think it was very silly of the Irish public to give the :twofinger: to europe especially giving our economic instablity at the moment!
And what's wrong with U.S.E?
Bad result in my own opinion
A lot of people didn't understand the treaty so voted NO
Others voted No because they don't like something else that's going on in the country that has nothing to do with the issues up for the vote!(to spite the government)
If it was a bad thing, then I'm sure the lads that run our country for us (fianna fail, fianna geil and labour) who all support the Yes vote,
Only Sinn Faen opposed it, and they have opposed everything the europe has ever done! It's one thing being "PRO IRISH" But ANTI everyone else is just not productive!
If we were a united europe we would be 1.5 times the size of the USA (400 Million compared to 240)
Just my opinion!
Dan

if the treaty had passed it was "jobs for the boys" in europe, eamon dunphy wrote a great article about it in the star on wednesday, I am not against the idea of a U.S.E but lets make the playing fields level all across the board, is that not one of the reasons we voted to bring in the euro???? what about allowing other european companys (eg insurance) to set up in ireland and we could do visa versa, itll never happen, instaed we have a goverment who want us to hold off on a pay increase but can allow to give themselves a 30K rise, yet every day the cost of living goes up and they will do nothing about it. If this was happening in france there would be a united front the people would stand up, and thats what hapend here, the people said enough is enough.

Just watch out for round 2 where yes will mean no and no will mean yes....

dead right johnny!!!!!!

hope cowen gets slaugthered at these euro meetings
theyve(government) done nothing for the irish only help the rest of europe pillage and rape this country
roll on to london now for the olympics

There is a sign beside every new major road saying funded by the EU!
They have been pumping money into Ireland for years
A Global economic downturn has us in a spot of bother at the moment, nothing to do our government,
But defo not a good time to be pissing off our main business partners,
Look at it in "school yard terms" We have just voted to be left behind while most of our "freinds" have decided to team up together for strength in numbers,
Nothing big or clever about that, Just makes us look like an ungreatful bunch of money grabbers that doesn't want to repay the good will afforded to us!
Dan

At the end of the day, Non of us really know what this is all about,So lets please make sure no one takes this to seriously and starts getting all grumpy

I have to say the Irish people did not under stand what it was all about and that is the goverments fault!

They failed to realise that their not talking to people who understand their way of talking!

They should have spelt it out in laymans terms as to what exactly would change but they didn't and it came across as if they where trying to hide something! The thing that SF did was high light the Cons and in a very understandable way for the people and they hit the nerve about how long we have ran our own country and that this was handing power away from our hands! Now this is not true as such as they bent it a bit but it was enough to plant a seed of dought that the goverment did nothing to explain!

They all under stood what was going to happen and I'm sure it would have meant more money along the way for the Goverment themselves but failed to explain to the Irish people what the benifits would be at ground level! What would I get out of it? What would be taken away from me if anything?

I tried to look into this over the past few weeks and just couldn't understand or say for sure wheather it was a bad thing for us or not so I voted NO because I'm not going to commit to change this country if I don't know for certin if it would be for the best or not and I'm sure that the rest of this country where pritty much the same!

If we land on our arse now because of it, they only people that can be plaimed is the goverment!

Instead of standing on Just their Pro side of things and pretending that there was no down side they should have stood up with their hands in the air and told the people exactly what would happen on both sides of the argument!

have to agree also, would much rather be in europe than out of it, this country would go to sh1t if we weren't part of the EU
