Petrolheads
the better half wants to shift on her 2006 1.6 petrol zafira and downsize ive been looking at the mazda 6 on donedeal 2004/05 model any advice on them are they a good yoke there making 2-2.5k i know a fella who has a 99 one diesel and he swears by it????

friend of mine had one alan 80k on it 05 and turbo went and what ever else happend it now needs an engine he bought it second hand so it could have being abused :dontknow:. there a nice car in fairness

My sister still owns one. its 03 though.

Last year the head has literally melted on the engine and in result the entire engine had to be replaced (it was cheaper then the rebuild)

Its a great car but I would definitely avoid the diesel imo.

Well your mates cant be a 99 as they didnt come out til late 2002. As for engine-they had problems with the pick up gauze getting blocked with crap and engines going bang as a result but as with any modern car-if service history is there and checks out should be ok

Father inlaw had 1, cant remember whafyear it was, but great car
Had a few small annoyances with it but nothing major
Plenty or punch to keep out of trouble
Handling was alright, bigger wheel smaller profile tyre would have improved that alot tho

I wouldn't buy any diesel Alan... Especially if its getting up in the miles.anytging over 60k mikes will just become a money pit. The oil strainers clog and can cause the heads to lock. Also ... AFAIK most Mazda blocks are alloy so if they lock heads or over heat them they melt and are scrap.

I bought one last week. 2006 mazda6 2.0d sport 143 bhp. Can't fault it. Has full service history and full warranty for 6 months. Nice car to drive. Not a patch on a Scooby but nice all the same.

Two people I know had a diesel Mada6 and both needed two engines and after 2nd replacement gave up and sold on.
One was bought when 2 years old with only 50k on it and the other one was an '03 bought with a 120k on it and needed engine replaced by the time it hit 137k (all miles).
The diesels do seem to suffer premature failure and a better than specified service history is paramount my sister was told by the specialist who overhauled her engine.
Yet after proper servicing about 30k later started to go again so she sold up.

In general they are a great car though. They are luxurious inside and huge boot etc (on hatch) and have reasonable handling though suspension is a bit soft and steering a bit over-asssisted. I had two older petrol ones (a 2.0 and 2.2i) and they were absolutely great and one of those had over 240k miles on it when I sold it and was driven for another 2 years by a local fella (was converted to LPG so cheap to run).

ok gone off the idea now!!!maybe there cheap for a reason!!what would yas recommend for family(5) car good value for money, easy to run/cheap on fuel ect her main reason for changing the zafira is that motorway driving you need a 6th gear which our one doesnt have and is quite thirsy ?

Depends on your taste and what's available at right spec and money...

Skoda Octavias are spacious, very well made and cheap as chips to run.

My sister actually got an Avensis after the Mazda6 and very happy with it... at least as powerful, almost as big and way easier on juice... Avensis maybe not the most exciting and bit agricultural, but bullet-proof and quick search threw this one up http://www.carzone.ie/search/Toyota/Avensis/COMES-WI/37713729632196530/advert?channel=CARS great value and hard to beat with such low mileage. Wouldn't be anywhere near as big as the Zafira though and MPVs typically big dearer unless you get into weak stuff like Renault etc.

Hey Alan,

Im going off topic here a bit but I rented a Nissan Qashqai
only two weeks ago , it was turbo diesel , 6 speed , nice bit of poke between the gears ,
very very comfortable , and not too
bad on the handling but what blew me away was the miles per gallon .

I didn't take a reading but I filled up in Cork drove straight to Kilronan Castle, in Boyle Co.Roscommon
took 4.5hrs,stayed the weekend , ended up driving from the hotel back to Mullingar, back to the hotel and then back
to Cork on one tank of diesel . When I filled up before handing the car back it cost €96

Im not too sure what the older models go for but might be worth a look

NIall.

Mazda, like ford, are using peugeot engines so same problems across all, and same problems across most modern diesel engines. If they're not run on low sulphur oil, then the turbo feeds will block, followed by the engine and then they're scrap.

The peugeot engines are probably amongst the best as when thingsdo go wrong, parts are easily got and reasonably priced compared to some models.

Once they're looked after they're bullet proof. There's a taximan local to me who has a 04 since new and it's well over 500,000 miles now and all he's had is general maintenance, a turbo went at 350,000 and he'd to replace a boost pipe and the bracket for the intercooler rusted away and started to rattle which also needed to be replaced but he said other than that the car is faultless and it still runs as it did on day 1.

Mazda 6 diesels are not a good buy
A lady at work upgraded to a brand new petrol in 2005 it was wrote off. And proceeded to buy a dieseL main dealer service and very light useage engine died coming into her house one day at almost idle totally without warning crankshaft fooked
4grand later from the dealer on an 2006 Mazda it's still not right time to burn it I reckon
Look up done deal there cheap and always for sale needing engines
Impossible To get in the scrap yards too even if you would be fool enough to buy one

all advice welcomed lads as i said gone off them now as cheap for a reason so looking at skoda now not sure she will like them ive sent her some examples as im in work not heard anything bk yet lol

all modern diesels are like everything really, if you don't take care it, service it using correct parts, oils etc

there gonna give you trouble.
