Disappointment for show organisers despite Jap-Fest success
Timing Problem during Time Attack leads to event Re-Run
Mondello Park's first ever Japanese Car Festival 'Jap-Fest', held last weekend, was a huge sucess for the Kildare venue attracting an extremely large crowd and capacity entries in all competitions.
The show featured some excellent static exhibits courtesy of the many Japanese car clubs and enthusiasts showing off their vehicles and exciting track action with Drifting, Drag Racing and Time Attack.
Despite the overall sucess of the show the organisers were disappointed to have encountered some problems in the timing of the Time Attack competition which meant that the circuit did not provide the quality service they would have wished to competitors in this competition. As Mondello Managing Director John Morris explains, "The induction loop in the track surface failed during the time attack and consequently some cars did not record times for all of their laps. The system uses a transponder in each car which sends a signal via the loop in the track to our timing computer. If the loop fails there is a back up photocell system which sends a beam across the track which the cars break to create their times. The large crowd spectating at the start finish area meant that the photocell was bumped and misalignment so that too failed to pick up the cars. As a result we cannot be certain that the fastest times for every car were recorded correctly."
As a result of the timing problems and in order to ensure fair play to all competitors and the sponsors 'Westward Engineering', Mondello Park has approached the man announced as winner on the day, Philip Burdock, and asked if he would agree to a re-run of Sundays time attack. John Morris again explains,"Philip was undoubtedly one of the quickest cars and he could have refused point blank, but it's a measure of the man that he didn't want there to be any doubt over his victory and agreed to a re-run". Details of the re-run which is likely to take place at the October Bank Holiday Monday Track Day will be announced shortly.
Following the sucess of the first ever Mondello Park organised Time Attack which attracted the best entry yet seen in an Irish event the circuit plans to run a six round Time Attack championship in 2008. The series will use both the National and International circuits and details will be announced over the coming months.
The popularity of Irelands first Jap-Fest looks likely to secure the show an annual place on the Mondello Park calendar and the date for the 2008 show will be announced over the coming months.
