Maybe somebody here will be able to help..
moved into a rented house a few months ago, but its beside a busy dual carraigeway.. cars going up and down all night long, windows are double glazed but seem old enough... the noise of the traffic going by is like im lying out on the road.... while i like the sound of (some) car engines, its a bit much when im trying to sleep... is there any cheap retro fit solution to reducing the amount of noise coming in the windows?

any help appreciated lads.... :ponder2:

Heavy Curtains.....
I know it sounds silly but a good thick heavy set of curtains will actually help to cut it down a little (not alot but every little helps)
also make sure all vents in the window are closed and that kinda thing.....

Or you could get "extra dark" lining. Most fabric shops should sell it. Heavy nearly like rubber thats supposed to go on back of curtins.
Great for blocking light and noise.

Dont know if thats the proper name will try and find out

:smokin:

There called blackout curtains, they sit behind your curtains and as carlo says they are rubber like material!!

These arent great for sound to be honest with you, and are mainly for blocking light but could help.

The alternative is to get venetian/wooden blinds and then can still use curtains!!

Id go with maybe resealing the edges of the window with the adhesive you put on with a gun (mastick i think its called)

the sister did that with a draughty window in her old house and found it reduced the sound too!!!

Chances are that the Windows need a good service lad

Over time rubber seals ,hinges and gears become worn and often ineffective .

See it every week ( windows and doors is what i do ) and i usually run thru a house in few hours and get everything tight and working again ,

If you want me to take a look thats no problem could give you an idea of cost and whats needed

Cheers

Tommy

Very nice offer tommy!!!

Good man Tommy!!!!
Fair play and damn nice offer there...
How much would a service normally cost on windows? Or is there any way to prolongue the life of the rubbers?

Not wantin to sound smart Hammie but generally depends on how many windows that there is , Most 3 bed houses wouldn't cost any more than 60 quid , the most coommon problem is broken hinges and they cost from 20-25 euro per set , depending on size ,

think thats fairly reasonable considering the amount of heat lost thru windows and doors that aint closing properly ,

Vaseline and wd 40 are the best bet to prolonge the life of your windows , once its on the recievers and the lock mechanisms it'll save em no end ,

thanks man....
Just wantin to find out what the best way of keepin the rubbers on my own windows good is really.
Cheers for the info

@Tommy555 - Thanks man appreciate the offer.. il get on to the landlord and see if i can get him to foot the bill, il let you know anyway. are you based in dublin?

Tommy has sorted a few windows for me recently!
Great job, well worth doing!

based in wicklow lad but travel any where . best of luck gettin land lord to pay , they aint to keen on spendin money on the houses but they still want top dollar rental's

As Tommy 555 said repair the rubber seals and the like. It will help towards reducing noise and any draughts when they are tightened up. Tommy knows his windows

Failing that new windows with a heavier sound proof glazing €$£. If the windows are old it might be time for an upgrade. No landlord wants to lose tenants at the moment.

Heavy curtains can also work but id say if your beside a dual carriageway the noise intesity is fairly high and the effect will be low.

acoustic glass or triple glazed would be ideal beside a dualer or motor way , not as experive as you'd imagine . triple glazed units start at around 15 euro a square foot plus vat and fitting
