ODB1 how to connect reader

I've a 96 STI RA and my friend has a garage which has the connection to the yellow connector but not sure how to put the ECU into read mode so it will connect.
I think the 2 green connectors are to put the solenoids into test mode. The black one put it into blinking lights mode.
But what about a reader, what the process?

Do the check engine light flash code way
Unless you're mate has a obd1 code reader or subaru ssm he won't be able to read it afaik

His should read it as it has the connection for the OBD1 on the loom , just wondering what the process is for putting the ECU in read mode.

I'd say he has a obd2 cable which will be wired diferentlly
He needs a obd1 cable
The ecu reads when you connect
There is no putting in to read mode just turn on ignition
I'd say his won't read so just do flash mode which will read any codes in there it's the same either way

Would a JOBD reader work for this? I have the ANCEL JP700 (JOBD OBD2) Reader if it's any use to you? North Dublin area

I'll see how I get on with the flashing lights, should point me in the right direction.
