NEED HELP LADS/LASSIES :hammerhead: :hammerhead: :hammerhead: :hammerhead:

Currently using dell Dimension3100 and is very slow.Laptop downstairs running fine so nothing wrong with with broadband.

Could take 2-3 minutes at times to load from one page to next.Given up trying to play poker on it.

Have ran a disk clean up and still have 68% free space and defragmented files(whatever that is- took about 3 hours)

Checked all leads into modem and screen and all seem ok

Any ideas much appricated

Sounds like there is something running in the background - maybe spyware of some sort.
Download 'Spybot' and run it to see if it finds anything.

You can also hit 'ctrl, alt, delete' once and bring up the task manager to see what programs are running and which ones are using the most memory

Alan.

Good man Alan

Ye tried the ctrl alt del usually when i got fed up waiting.

Gonna download that spybot

Thanks again..

:smokin:

No probs.

Another good program to try is 'CCleaner'
I would use this and spybot and see if it sorts you out

Alan.

If the delay is mainly to do with the browser loading up pages try removing or disabling a lot of the add-ons.

In the browser (Internet Explorer) click on the Tools menu and then choose the Manage Add-ons option.

In the past I've found that all of the toolbars and accelerators etc. eventually start fighting each other when trying to help you.

Cheers, P.

more than likely its your antivirus. when the computer turns on press control alt delete when the task manager starts up go to view select coloumn highlight vm(virtual memory) press ok then check which is using the most more than likely antivirus. if yeah need any help configuring the antivirus to run on certain programmes i will run you through it.

Be wary that AVG will slow your computer down when its actually running but its one of the best I've found so far...along with spybot!

First U may want to try isolate things by creating new 'test' user account and see if the same issue appears there.

yweah i had that avg at homcos i started to get viruses and whatnot from looking at "specialist websites " ...
so i downloaded AVG and it got rid of all of them ,
but then when i would turn on the computer it would check the whole system again , which took about 30minutes , during which time it was soo slow ,it was basically unusable

Never had a problem with AVG, you guys must be looking at some dodgy sites if you need to run it once a day. I run it once a week, maybe twice dpending on my veiwing material.

It runs once a day in the office but at home I run it every few days!

@ silverbullitt: you can change your scheduled scan time and leave it run away when you're not using the computer!

avg has a built in scanner that scans any media which comes in from your ip address causing the dll to be read which slows down system commands.when the system is being read the computer is nearly running at 80 percent before any other computer task has been performed.avg also needs a large quanity of ram so on 1gig computers you usually get file splinters which clog up the vm(virtual memory).

i use avg and it slow the computer down big time. so i just leave it run the scan and watch tv for an hour or so.

you can configure it to run when the computers idile so you wont have to wait

If u want a good, antivirus system which doesn't slow your machine down - NOD32 is the way to go.

using it on Windows machines for about 4 years with no issues at all.

Ye have NOD32 on it at the moment.

[/quote] Thanks Prinz. Tried that. Same as looking under the bonnet of car.Am sure that everything that should be there is and not sure if there is any additions

Lee / Alan if i donload them will it mess up the nod32 as this works grand as the kids use this from time to time and blocks any unmanted sites. Well it dosent let them look at certain sites.

Thanks for all the help lads,

Have to start this karma thingy

:smokin:

just get avast less resource hungry .deal with avg all the time people thinking there computer is broke. :comp26:

Carlo,

You can use the 2 applications I reccomended with your current anti-virus
(try the CCleaner first to see if it fixes the problem)

Alan.
