pace notes ??? what do they mean

Petrolheads
Heres another question that i hope may be answered by someone more knowledgeable than i ,on here .
In car rally videos show the navigator shouting out a litany of instructions to the ever focused driver from the pace notes.
eg ..
150 3 left , over brow , 90 right , flat left ,

are these a standardized thing ,or do each driver/co-driver pair develop their own version ...

the instructions of road hazards are easy enough to work out , but i can never get my head around the numbers part ...

can anyone shed some light on this conundrum for me

Flat Left ... left hand turn FLAT OUT
150 3 left.... 150 meters 3 severity of the corner and direction of corner
etc

This is what I assumed. The guys are a team so surely they can develop something they are both comfortable with instead of using "standardized" pace notes.

crews do use there own personalised notes but takes more work
crews are issued with a standard set of notes
and do whats called a recce, this is driving the stage when the road isnt closed within the speed limit
so the crew can make alterations to the notes etc and find reference points on the stage in case the co driver gets lost in his notes
eg big red wall on left etc
the real trick with pace notes is to call them at the right time
bot co driver and driver have to work in harmony

For pace notes to work it takes total trust between co driver and driver ,
as copperhead mentioned timing is key and depending what pace the crew are running on the stage the co driver
needs to adjust the timing of the notes he calls to ensure a smooth, safe and fast stage time.

So the number system for bends is as follows , 1 for a slight bend and 6 for a severe bend.
a more severe bend would be a 90 left or right , with a Hairpin bend the worst of the lot.... and as you know the handbrake is normally used to get around those , great funnnnnnnn.

ok now were getting somewhere , so with a 130 4 right ,

the corner is 130 metres away , and it is a medium/severe right turn ...

as said above.
did co-driver for my mate a few times in single stage rallys up north.some crack, the only thing is you get to see nothing as your head is buried in the notes all the time with only a quick few times to look up to make sure your calling them properly.
some drivers use the 1 to 6 in different ways. we used the numbers as how fast you could take a bend or what pace you could approach it and safely go through it. i.e. 3 right: was approach maybe in 5th or 4th and then select 3rd gear and take the bend.also 1 to 6 was the severity of the bend/corner i.e. 1 was very tight and 6 was very fast!!

bear in mind all this changes greatly depending on tyre compounds (slicks, inters, wets) and weather conditions.

as the lads have said you have to both write your own notes and be 110% confident in each other.
if that fails.........you generally end upside down looking at each other and having a large repair bill!!

Your getting there.....

K-right 70,turn 2 left over crest translated means 90degree right, after 70m turn sharp left at the top of the crest. 1 is basically a hairpin-2 is not quite as severe etc etc. But some people reverse this formula-like a 6 is a hairpin.

arra jaysus ...

im as confused now as ever i was ....
but im getting there ...
its starting to make some bit of sense to me anyways

I cant remember what "maybe" means ??

is it the nav not knowing what the surface is like round the bend? ie. driving on notes with no recce

1 example,
Could be when doing the recce there might have been a cut in the notes and based on road position that could cause the road to get muddy/slippy from the cars ahead .
