Sports cat

Personally I'd say yes... sports cat flows much better, so car would go lean(er than normal) and could det easier.
Also keep in mind that v2 ecu not as sophisticated either, so less able to compensate (as quickly) for things (like lean event causing additional fuel to try regulate, or pull timing etc).

Someone near me had a v2 RA and 3 engines (2 were build with forged internals) within 2 years because of putting an open exhaust on an unmapped car. Why he put all that money into those engines and never bothered to map it properly is beyond me... but there you go.

I have a v1 sti and am thinking of buying the same sports cat myself. Was hoping I wouldn't need to get the car mapped.

I?ve a Power FC and hand commander for v1 and v2 cars if you?re looking

I now very little about mapping jap cars to be honest . i ran a 95 gt turbo starlet 16/17 years ago, 50,000klms over 2 years , never mapped, never let me down once . Only other jap i had was dc5 . All other imprezas i had werent jdm imports . My v2 sti runs very well with a bit of nf booster . im just wondering what is the cheapest / safest way to make some gains on it .

If i set up a power fc and sports cat what sort of gains would i roughly see and at what cost ?
Engine is pretty good coil packs , maf , plugs all recently changed

Around 550 for cost to map + Ecu and you might not see any real gains but your engine will run much safer . So it?s not really about the numbers

Jap cars were tuned for 99 octane and with the standard exhaust in place. You knock sensor will pick up any detonation that comes from running lower octane fuel or lean running and will retard the power of the engine to keep it safe. The NF will compensate for the fuel but is an additional cost, it won?t compensate for the lean issues. The mapping will allow for the engine to be tuned for maximum safe power on your chosen fuel with your individual setup. The power FC just plugs straight into the car and you can then get it mapped professionally - a good map and sports car should see good gains and can also be set up for your own driving style. The hand commander is useful for a number of things including setting a rev limit for your NCT

If you get it mapped for Irish fuel you won?t need the NF any more - saving money, or getbit mapped for NF and get more power. There are very few options in Ireland for mapping the OEM v1 and v2 ECUs

I thought it was jap cars from 1996 on that ran 99 octane fuel , 1995 & older jap cars ran on 95 octane

As there was no 99 octane in 1995 in japan .

You?re correct that the 102 octane was later but unless I?m very much mistaken, the earlier cars were all specced for 97 octane which was the standard back in japan pre 1996 - we don?t even get that here unfortunately

Depends .

I've seen 100 and 200 cell sports cats for sale for Subaru, apparently you need a 200 to pass the test,
