sti diff control

Petrolheads
well lads mate of mine has a 96 4dr sti...he drives it all to the rear nearly all of the time but we were on slippy roads over the xmas and he put the dif up 2 clicks and all seamed ok ..but we found the car wouldnt turn in a gate way after about 10mls..so he put the diff back to rear and there was a clunk noise from the front when he reverced back :dunno:anyone have any ideas??? he driving it on rear again now and has had no problems but he has not put the diff up since :dunno:

DCCD system and diff's are almost bulletproof. Try it again and see does it happen. If so change the oil is the gearbox and check is there any debris in the oil.

what your friend experienced is perfectly normal. When he was turning into his drive/gate he should of put the diff all the way back again. The clunking noise was because the wheels had grip when the idea of pushing the DCCD forward is that there is no grip and the wheels spin (for example on snow)

Its nothing to worry about. Try only one click forward when it is wet. It works fine for me. I think two clicks forward is too much for just a wet road.

Yep as AndyC says that is perfectly normall.
To put it another way the more you notch the DCCD
forward the bigger your turning circle becomes............so there is no
way ye could of made it in the drive.........well unless ya fancy a little 4 wheel
drift :D :D

The diff will give a large clunk noise in those situations.
The diff can be so tight...... if you park your car on a hill and notch
the diff all the way to full lock you don't need a handbrake ..........the car
won't budge................(depends on how worn your diff is)

Just after reading this thread. Seriously happy with what i am after reading, i bought my first ra jus before christmas and the clutch was definitely going when i bought it, so have a new one on order, just in the yard i experienced slight clonking when turning and kind of hard to turn like it was missing drive, this was with the clutch nearly completely gone, i presume its kind of the same situation?

Hey 0-60mph welcome aboard

Ya if you had your diff set to full lock or notched forward then yes
you would hear a dull clunk noise in tight turning or when coming to a complete
stop a pulling up the handbrake.

BTW always drive your car with the DCCD (driver controlled centrall diff) rolled fully
back. That will give a ratio of 2 thirds to the rear and 1 third to the front.
Some lads will notch it forward 1 or 2 steps to keep her nice and straight in the wet.
All depends on wether you prefer going sideways or straight :p

Here's a link to a good post by AndyC on DCCD

v v good thanks a million for that. i thought full lock was 4wd. thats great advice thaks again

0-60mph well your car is permanent 4wd :D
the DCCD will simply switch the power in favour of the rear or center it.
ie.most of the power to the back and a small bit to the front.......and all the way to a full
50:50 split front and rear. Now it dose alot more than that but that's basically it.
