STI Type R/RA Question

Good afternoon lads, was just talking to a recommended jap car importer. I was asking as to the availability of above car, and he all but tried to talk me out of it. Said the engines in both are very fragile compared to the standard WRX and would not be recommended as an every day car.
Has anyone ever heard of this?

Any help would be great.

The trader's misgivings about Type R/RAs is purely down to the fact that Jap cars are set up to run with 101RON fuel. We have crappy 95RON over here so there is a higher chance of engine detonation if you choose not to get the engine remapped for our lower grade fuel. Its not just STi Type R and Ra owners that have the problem - Jap import WRXs are just as prone...

Hey myOOscooby,
I reckon 30 - 40 % of club members have jap import cars
That importer is a TWAT, the whole reason for getting a Jap import
is simpiy cause they have higher spec engines , none more so than the TypeR's / Ra's
which have uprated pistons, etc........

The big prob is as Paulo said you MUST get the car re-mapped to run on
our shitty 95 RON fuel..............................if not she''l be slow , lumpy, will suffer from
KNOCK and sonner or later will go bang.

Use the search section for all info on mapping cars and why

Niall.

as said above... japs are higher spec cars and designed to run 101 ron petrol... so need map but don't let that turn you off at all for the power and spec increase over irish one..

Cheers lads, it was a bit of a shock to me alright. I've been a long time reader of the forums here and scoobynet & sidc and have never heard the likes. But what he said, coupled with so many cars for sale in UK with rebuilt engines I was getting a little worried.
I suppose if you treat your car like a rally car all the time you will pay the consequences. Seeing Subaru on Engineering the World Rally last night changing the gearbox twice over the 1 weekend suggests that even rally cars don't like that sort of abuse!
