To be honest could be a few things Chances of it being a faulty sensor are very slim . Before it started overheating Was it checked for coolant regularly as in was it low . What klm are on the car. Has it had a timing belt or waterpump change at ant any stage do you know .
What engine is it?
Thermostats rarely fail in them.
Do a "sniff" test and will see from there
Could tell you who to stay away from. Most lads down there dont know there subarus and are full of BS take it from me, I learned the hard way.
