I wanna take this moment to highlight something to you all , something which i didn't even know was possible until a few weeks ago .
In today's world its fair to assume that nearly all of our lives have been touched by cancer at some stage , if its by a friend/relative of ours contracting it , or a relative of a friend . Its prevalent ,indiscriminate and can attack anyone ,young and old .
Leukemia is a particular form of cancer whereby the person affected cannot make white blood cells anymore , and thus cannot fight infection.
Bone Marrow (stem cell) transplants can be an option for patients suffering from certain types of leukemia or other fatal blood disorders, where the patients own marrow stops producing blood cells. A transplant may also be necessary for children with rare metabolic disorders.
The most suitable donor is a fully matched family member but due to falling family sizes, a sibling donor is not an option for a large number of patients. If a suitable donor is not found within the family, a search for an unrelated donor is necessary.

And this is what i didn't know ,that you can register yourself on a database as an unrelated bone marrow donor . whereby your blood sample is taken and checked . If a match is found in the future you are contacted and asked if you would like to donate.

I only heard this on Joe Duffy a few weeks ago , and i registered online this Tuesday , and by Tuesday night i had donated my blood in Dungarvan to put myself on the database. They only took a small sample of blood and altogether it only took twenty minutes .

So i ask all of ye , to consider it. and to try and put yourself in the position that either you,or someone you cared about needed a bone marrow transplant , wouldn't it be nice to know that there was someone out there who was a match and had taken the time to register and given someone that second chance at life

oh and one more thing , to try and put in perspective how little this is known about , when i approached the nurse at the blood bank , she didn't have a clue that they actually had a donor database ...
so if they don't know , and they do this thing day-in day out , how the hell are the general population supposed to know.
which is why im informing ye of it now

Thank you for reading

well said silverbullet,
i know a few peple affected by this, one in particular only died on tuesday from cancer.
defo something worth thinking about

I'd be up for that ..........lost a school mate to it. Powers that be need to make people aware of these things

Well said Silverbullit, it's a subject close to my heart as I lost my father to cancer earlier this year.

About ten years ago a very good friend of mine decided to donate his bone marrow after losing his mother to lukemia before she was 50. He was found to be a match to a young german kid. This kid got 6 precious years of life that he would never have had if he did not find a matching donor. It's an amazing thing to be able to give the gift of life to someone else, no matter how long or short it may be. I can't tell you how much respect I have for anyone who donates. The operation is extremely painful and can have repercussions. Unfortunately my mate had to retire as an aircraft engineer at 30 years of age due back and hip problems directly attributed to the procedure, but, he would not change a thing.

Very well put mate.
Tried to start giving blood last year and was told that because I lived in Northern Ireland during the Mad cow disease years the Irish goverment wouldnt allow me to be used as a blood doner.
While I can understand that there may be risks.... Surely they would be better off testing my blood for anything out of the ordinary and then
if everything isnt perfect then rejecting the blood?
Dont want to take over your thread or nothin but odviously there are flaws in the system somewhere
