Type R Gearbox

I've been looking at a type r with the gearbox gone.

Are these hard to source being a 4.4 fd

Is a 6 speed conversion worth doing or would it take away from the originality of the car

Ah no defo would not agree with that.

6 speed suits them perfect imo.

That idea of putting a longer 5th in them defo ruins them.

Agree with Dave 6 speed is the only job, have 2 of them both 6 speed, I wouldn't think the gearing differs a massive amount but you have 6th for cruising, imo the original 5th is is geared way too low it's great if you are driving the hole out of it but a pain in the tits other than that.

what else is need to fit the 6 speed box,

Assuming the rear diff has to be matched.

Its going to be a weekend toy.

How much are type r boxs making compared to a full 6 speed conversion

I think you'd need box, diffs, shafts and hubs. Dave will be able to tell you exactly what's needed. A DCCD 6 speed is probably a different figure area again. Plus then getting it wired for use in a classic.

It's a good while since I have done one but it is just bolt in and from memory but I could be wrong you just need box propshaft diff and linkages, don't think you need shafts and definitely don't need hubs, may need starter and flywheel but I don't think so.

On a type r

Need

Box
Prop
Diff
Linkage

Can retain 5 speed clutch if still life in it.

To run 6 speed clutch set up.

Will need

Flywheel
Starter

The dccd boxes go for £1800gbp on their own.

its all personal opinion

the cost of the conversion for what u get makes no sense to me anyway
much better bang for buck in other ways
also with the way prices of clean type r are going originality will be lost
if you want a motorway cruiser buy a diff car lol

just buy it, bang a box in it and enjoy it
