What camera?

Looking to get a new camera soon, I'm thinking of making the leap to digital SLR. Few lads in work have some Canon ones, but said the lense that usually comes with them isnt great and you should maybe buy just the body and then a separate upgraded lense. No I have always been a Nikon man, so im torn between both manufacturers, looking to spend between 500-700 euro. Hvae been looking at the Canon 400D, 450D Nikon D40, D60 . Anyone have any recommendations on a camera and best place to buy them? Cheers

ive a nikon d70 and a canon 350d both great cameras but i prefer the nikon just a little bit more....you get a great lense with the nikon...if your goin for a canon try and get a better lense of them than the standard one

The old adage is "you don't buy a camera, you buy a system" so no matter what body you go with, you'll invest in lenses and spend a fair bit on kit. in a few year's time, you'll update the body and still be left with the lenses. Can't go wrong with either Canon or Nikon. I have a D80 myself, but was very close to getting a 400D, there would have been very little in it. I'd say in my case it's what's behind the lens is the limiting factor rather than the hardware....

I have a D80 myself and i love it, i believe they have come way down in price too, supposedly available for about 450 euro nowadays

nikon d80 is still about 790 euro these days! and about 620 for body only.

so it has boiled down to the Canon 450D and Nikon D60. both come just with a standard 18-55mm lense. I've heard the Nikon lenses are better but i'm open to correction! Nikon d60 is cheaper by about 100 euro. anyone know the cheapest place to buy online?

Not sure about the cheapest but I got mine in AJ Purdy's in Essex by mail order (www.ajpurdy.co.uk). They were far cheaper than any shop in Ireland at the time, and that was when sterling was 11% dearer than it is now. There is probably cheaper on EBay (Kea Photo and UR Galaxy etc.) but you have the added hassle of customs clearance and warranty if things go wrong. Ken Rockwell gives good reviews (www.kenrockwell.com) so it's worth seeing what he says about the two models, also look at dpreview.com for in-depth reviews - a very good resource

after reading multiple review etc i decided to go for the Nikon D40. ordered it from Pixmania for 410 euro delivered. cheers for all the info guys
