what RPM you cruise on?

So, just quick question. We got with a friend into big argument, about 'cruising' and what RPMs. When I had my old corsa, I had no problem cruising around town on 5th gear going 50-60kmh on super low RPMs.

With WRX however, this just doesnt work. Unless I am slowing down, I need to keep the WRX above 2000RPM at all times, so cruising at 1500 is just impossible. Or at least car makes sounds that it just doesnt like it.

Is it just me, or are all subarus made for 2000+ RPM? Would you keep your Subaru at 1500RPM?

His argument is, that all engines should be able to do it, which I never denied, except... some gearboxes have their ratios just not made for that range and needs to be on higher RPMs?

On motorway driving, the P1 is quiet happy sitting in 5th at 2.5

Depends on driver and car, obviously a 2.5 will be better

My wrx is quite happy between 1,500 and 2,000. When I start cold etc I never go above 2,000 until the car is at full temp. So I know it will happily sit just above 1,500 no problem.

My type R sits at 3200 in 5th.

As far as I know the P1 had a longer 5th gear for the UK market.

I think it's the resonance of the Awd system at low rpm you are feeling, the engine is happy to be at that rpm the rest of the drivetrain is not . If it shudders or is vibrating through the chassis select a lower gear

Wow, this might be spot on...

Don't remember. There's a MASSIVE thread on boards.ie on this. Not too much chat on thread either.
