What did you do to your car today?

Hey, haven?t actually done too much in 2019 at all, the wagon spent much of the year parked up trying to sort odd issues with it. Dave Byrne got it sorted eventually and back on the road for December, it?s now tested and up and running.

Never really liked the Enkei?s but played around with the spa a little and very happy with them now. Put on orange indicators and side lights, not for the USDM look yo, just to break up the colour I never liked the clear side lights.
Jobs for the new year are to replace the dash and fit a set of new Defi?s I?ve had in a box for two years now! And join ISDC and finally enjoy the car this Summer!

Can?t see how to attach a picture, I?m on the phone here [emoji1751]*[emoji3603]
Cool. Think you can upload pics directly once you are a full member. Maybe admin can help you with that [emoji106]

What kind of wagon you got btw?

Class. How do you find the Gfb? I recently fitted the Gfb Respons bov to mine and it made the car a lot smoother along with adding all the right noises [emoji3]

Funny you should say that it's smoother because that's exactly what my first impression driving it after the install was. The valve I installed is just a recirc valve so it just makes like a little sneeze noise when I change gears - your Respons BOV is definitely the way to go as you have the best of both worlds and get to choose how much to vent and how much to recirculate. I do miss the BOV noises but the car definitely feels better to drive now.

No mechanical work but full wash, polish and sealant done this morning. Its once the weather turn in Feb I'll be glad I've done it already. No need for the machine polisher then it's just a top up.

Ah maybe that?s it, I think I?ve uploaded pictures before, that?s why I was wondering. EDIT - just noticed the posting permissions, didn?t spot that on the phone!

I?ve a V4 Sti classic, I?m on your IG, it?s a dark blue with gold Enkei?s!

Apologies I didn't recognise your name there. Seen the latest pics on IG of your car. Looking well and would love to see it maybe at the next meet[emoji106][emoji3]

I was very surprised as well coz I wasn't buying into their online blurb at all and thought I'd try it out. I was lucky to find a used one in very good condition.
Car used to kinda have a jerky motion when the revs dropped at slower speeds. Npw that's gone completely after I adjusted the spring load. Install wasn't too bad and adjustment was very easy. Highly recommended piece of kit as it's very versatile but still not obnoxiously loud.

Couldn't say myself as I've never used that one, have used Flex and a Halfords special lol
Do you mean it slows down with pressure or...?
Either way, it looks like it's done the trick, no swirls ????

No, what I mean is when you work in the polish the way you?re supposed to ie spread it at low speed then increase the speed for a few passes it?s all fine. But when it comes to buff off it?s really hard and takes a few goes to buff it off, almost like wax that has been left go hard for a while (even though this is indoors at cool temperatures). I?d be worried that having to buff so much would start scratching the paint again. Main thing is it?s an improvement as the 50/50 shows. Just need to protect it with wax and get out and drive the thing!

Oh right I'm with you now,, maybe it's the polish/compound itself, I find Menzerna to be good.

Have used and tried a few more of the big brand names, but Menzerna - no complaints and great results

Either way, as I said, it done the trick. We learn as we go ey lol

Out of interest, what cloth are you using to buff afterward?

Generally in colder temps you've more "work time" to use with the compound. If you're working outside, or even inside in a cold environment, the latent temp of the panels wont be ideal. You want cool working temps, but not cold. You're fine so long as the polish is being worked, but it's going to take that bit longer to get up to temp and let the abrasives work. As soon as you stop, the product and the panel are cooling quickly due to the ambient temperature.

Try working a smaller area, and dont be afraid of working the compound a bit longer. Give the area one last fast pass wherever product has been left to reside so you can get some heat back in that area, and then get in quick with the buffing cloth while it's still malleable.

If you're still having tacking issues, a quick mist of a panel wipe prep before buffing will remove the polish residue. Keep in mind, a smaller area means less product needed. Ideally come down a pad size aswell, but once you're not overloading the pad with product you're OK. I've used large pads on panels where there wasn't a crevice that required a smaller diameter pad to avoid touching surrounding panels.

I?m just using Halfords and Meguiars microfibres from Halfords, so probably not the best. Panels definitely cold, I?ve to do the bonnet one of the nights this week so I?ll try keep experimenting. Thanks

Only one rule. Start soft on paint. You can always go heavier but you cant polish paint back in.

Halfords kit is grand. You dont have to spend on more traditional detailing brands until your ready and by that stage you'll be able to see the difference between off the shelf and premium. Then it's off down the rabbit hole of what products work best on what paints and with which sealants and waxes ..........

Halfords and Megs will do for starting out. The higher the pile the better for removing polish. If your cloths are thin, just turn or change them more often and you'll be fine.

Took the forester to work today and gave it a wash and hoover haven't driven it since October no idea why I haven't but anyway [emoji848], Also for people who think a forester is a jeep!! It's Not when you see it beside and actual jeep
