Hi all,

Just wondering if anyone has any info on what might be a good replacement for a vf24 turbo in my 98 jdm v4 sti type r?
it seems the vf24 is obsolete now and I can get a vf28 or a vf35 from Olly Mccarron but unsure whether to take a chance with 2nd hand?
Anybody change theirs? and I'm also unsure as to where that leaves me with a remap needed for the different type?
Oh and should have said, the engine was built by api impreza back in 2012 and remapped to 330-350 (he never gave me an exact figure because it was done on the road)

Any info would be great,
Cheers,
Brian

Problem is there all old turbos now so getting a good second hand 1 is hard got .
Your going to need a remap for anything else really
You could get your own rebuilt and you’ll know what you have
Or upgrade to a blouch sc36 would be a fast spool up and get you 300-350 depending on mods
Vf24 be tipping out at 280-320 I’d say but depending on fuel used could be more

Thanks for the info scoobysub 👍
Yea I don't know is it worth taking that chance and I tried a few different crowds for rebuilds but they said they can't get parts for the vf24 anymore.
Probably is the safest option to go new then at least I know what I have I guess.
Would you have recommendations for where to go for a remap or even get the lot done, install and remap?

Cheers

Edit: would you know if the vf34 would be suitable for mine and would bolt straight in? (Sorry for all the questions! 🫣)

If wanting to stay standard, and as Scooobysub said above re: hybrids made from chineseum, have a look for a VF22, VF28 and VF35, depending on how to want it to drive/prefer your boost delivery.

Cheers JohnRA,
Yea I'd kinda want to be keeping it around the same as it is. Wouldn't be too well up on the differences between the turbos but from what I'm seeing fellas seem to recommend the vf34 or vf35 for the classic.

Not up on classic turbos but heard lads before saying 35 (newage sti Turbo) be laggy on classic least that's what I think I heard 🤔..do I know why no idea 🤣

Haha, I'd be the same! 🫣🤣 but sound thanks for that.. the consensus I'm seeming to find is the 34 might be the best option

Used a 35 before , they are not laggy at all
The exhaust housing size will usually be an indicator to how responsive the turbo will be a vf24 has a p20 housing and a vf35 has.a smaller p18 housing sacrificing slight bit of top end performance but because of the response at lower rpm you probably won’t notice

24 is a ball bearing cartridge and I think a 34 is aswell so go with that
