2001 Legacy B4 - Clutch slipping, how big a job is it ... Any other work to do ?

Hows all today ...

My Legacy isn't being driven too much lately and I'm thinking of putting her in storage for the summer, no point selling her unless I was getting a very decent offer and Donedeal has a fair few still on there at low prices. Anyway, she's rising in the revs when getting a spirited drive going into 3rd and 4th - going from 5000 - 7000 rpm without any gain in speed so in my little mind, my clutch is slipping ...
Is this something that could happen because of being stood up for a while and could it possibly come good with gentle driving - it wasn't slipping when I was driving it every day for sure ... 132k kms on the clock.

2 questions - what clutch would you recommend and secondly, with all the talk of bottom end failures on Donedeal with other legacy's, would I be as well off put a new set of shells on the crank shaft while I'm at it ... The car isn't mint but not too far off it to be fair. Passed NCT with no issues and has gotten a full T/Belt kit and full service including gearbox oil and Diff oil 10k ago by Frank Ryan Littleton (former Subaru main dealer)

Your thoughts please lads ... :scoobydoo:

Yes would say its your clutch. Possible with mileage that its still the original one.

No need for uprated. Standard one is fine.

Re putting bearings in. You need to strip the block down. So big labour. And would need every seal and gasket new as well. Not cheap.

as above it needs a clutch exedy oem replacement will be perfect not too hard of a job to do

I was on to Irishautoparts.ie earlier via chat, more than helpful. A replacement clutch will cost €195.00 incl vat.
LUK clutch 623304960

Any thoughts, is it good enough. The clutch pedal in the car at the minute is very hard ... I wouldn't mind tackling the job myself over the spring when I put her off the road ... it's driving fine at the minute but I can presume that this problem will only get worse ...

Change the crank seal while your at it

The flywheel imo must be skimmed and balanced.

Renew rear crank seal

Renew flywheel bearing.

Dave, thanks for the info, what's the difference in the 2 clutches .... Just being nosey really, we fit Luk clutches in the agri business where possible.

Also, can you enlighten me why the bottom end goes in these B4's. I had a 99 one before and the guy who bought it blew the engine shortly after ... Story goes the cylinders were washed during high revs racing a Mazda ... A 2.5 block was fitted and the same thing happened to that one too ... I had 40k on it without a hint of an issue ...

Thanks Dave and all above for the replies ...

Exedy is the oem equipment. So personally prefer to use it as eliminates any doubt it will do what its supposed to do as did the current one for 10+ years.

Many reason why subarus have failures. Most is the normal bad servicing, oil pressure issues, oil type, not checking levels enough etc. Or fueling. Caused by car type and stock map i.e jdm import. Bad mods again that effect fueling. Decat, induction kits etc.

In the case above sounds like detonation killed that engine. So fueling issues. And when replaced with a 2.5 if was from a normally aspirated will be a high compression engine 10.0:1. And possibly never mapped after. If had fueling issues prior then fitting a high comp engine and an extra 500cc without any more fuel, im sure it happened fairly quickly after fitting it on its first spirited run.

You're spot on Dave with the 2.5 conversion above. A Subaru know all tried the repair for the buyer of my car, it used 2 engines and still didn't empty the tank I had left in it.

I'm using semi synthetic 10/40 as I always have done. I once blew a Nissan 200 crank shaft 5 days after treating her to fully syn ... Seems to have blocked an oil gallery to the crank, spun one bearing. Frank at Subaru Littleton recommends 10/40, semi, I don't reddin the engine when I drive her, never hold her at 7-8k, would a remap help the double turbo lag and improve reliability regarding the crank ?

Map wont help engine lasting any longer from an oil lube area point of view. All Mechanical items can fail. Some last longer then others.

I believe your nissan situation was not related to fully syntetic oil.

Under 280-300 a good semi syntethic 10/40 oil is perfectly fine to use.

I'll use the leggy till spring and put here up in stands in the shed and do some tinkering. Thanks for the help Dave, is it worth while dropping just the sump to check the shells ?

Awkward to access them all.

So not really.

If I had a keeper car, for the sake of it I would get the injectors cleaned and flow tested and I would also get a pressure test on the fuel system... Subarus are real easy to do so it won't cost f all... It's no harm to know that your fueling is as it should be... Legacys are more prone to fuel issues causing damage due to there higher comp ratio...

There is little things like the above that are really no harm to do as a once off over haul
