Well guys.
The name is Mark and its my first post here, good site, lots of good info

Was bored Saturday so went looking at a few cars in Jap Cars near the airport.
Some tidy cars there, now i know they have mixed reviews, but i suppose is like anywhere else really.

Have been contemplating getting an impreza next, prob a type R,but the 22B they had their caught my eye.
I had seen it advertised on a few magazines and that but it really impressed me when i saw it on the flesh.
Admittedley it needs some money put into it but for the money it does look like a really good buy.
Price has really dropped aswell,32k-22k?
Any info??

I think... and don't quote me on this.... but that car has fibreglass front wings. In other words it's been smashed. And I know a few Scoobs haven't had a knock or two but If I was buying a 22B I'd be looking for the cleanest, lowest mileage and orignal car and It would be a weekend toy only!

Talk to Niall1 or Pete too about this car as they may know more about it then myself. I think Pete may have even gone and looked at it!

Ya he's spot on regarding all of it,didnt meet any of the salesmen, just gave a good look at it myself.
If im not mistaken i think some of the 22B's came with the carbon fibre trim as an option, might be wrong.
The needs a few bits and pieces, sti badge missing from passengers side wing, wrc vents would need to be replaced, roof scoop removed, origional mirrors, wheels are revolution but look really nice underneath it.What is the story with the BBS,can they be got anymore?
Underneath the bonnet looks nice and tidy, manifold etc,and from what i could see underneath it looks really clean aswell.
Think the front prodrive front calipers are the real deal aswell.
Also its converted to a six speed.

Weighing everything up it needs a bit of work, nothing major it seems, and as Matt said it needs a couple of grand spent but the car was 27k when he viewed it.
Wonder if ill go back for a second look this evening!!

Alright a nice way to start with a 22b anyway
never had any dealings with them myself but cant say ive
heard antin good about them, make sure ye have a machanic
preferably a scooby machanic and someone who knows about bodywork
and you should be ok

Some tidy cars there,

really, I was there about 2 weeks ago and I'd say not one car there is over a grade 3. Every scooby I looked at had dash trim/parts missing, holes in the dash, rust, broken/cracked body parts etc etc

Sorry when i meant some,i didnt mean all Subarus, gave a good walk around looking at most makes. Some nice integras etc..

Welcome Along Mark.

First off that lad is a cowboy so be carefull.
I looked at that car a few months ago. It has been there a long time.
Imo its not a very good example of a 22B.

Roof:
That roof vent looks fairly well bonded onto the roof and when you take it off it will damage the roof skin resulting in you having to repair or replace the roof skin.

Bonnet:
If you look at the rear edge of the bonnet you will see 2 different colour blues, and plenty of runs of paint.
Under the bonnet you will see where they just pegged in lots of filler around the vents which looks rough.

Front end:
I can remember something being abit off with it but I cant think at the moment.

Interior:
The interior was a mess the day I seen it, hole in the seat too.

Engine/box/diff etc I cant answer for as I didnt even want him to start it for me due to his bull**** so I just walked away.

I think that if your in the market for a 22B to just take your time and get a good example of one, Dont just buy the first one you see.
For that price of 22K you may think is cheap but add the following :

Full proper Service
Mapping
Bodywork
Genuine wheels if you can find a set and at that they are silly silly money
And any other unforseen problems which Im sure will occur.

All in all, it could end up costing lots more than you think.

Happy hunting,
Pete

Well Pete,
Thanks for that, like i said ive heard stories about him but never met him, looking forward to it!!

Ya the roof vent looks fairly well bonded alright, although im sure a good panel beater would get it off somehow. Then again it could be stuck on it for the last 7-8 years and would be very tricky.
Looking at the paintwork id say the car has been given a full respray fairly recentley, seems to be the proper colour too.Didnt notice the bonnet.Must give it another look.
Carbon mirrors are a bit faded aswell.
Pity to see a car like that on the forecourt for so long.
Might give another look at it during the week, just to look at the curves of it at least!!

Dont' get taken in too much by the looks Mark... hard I know... but it aint a clean one, needs a lot of expensive work and I'd hold out to find a nicer example IMO!

I put up with listining to his "i know everything there is to know" bull long enough to hear it start and run for a few mins.......
lets just say i told him to turn it off quick unless he wanted to rebuild the engine.... it was rough as a badgers back end

If u do buy a car from him ...... budget for a new engine.... you may find you need 1.... I have known several people to buy cars and drive them home only to blow up or die on the M50..... Thats not a big distance away either...

be very careful with your dealings with the man....

sayin that he did offer me a R32 GTR for handy money cause the big end was going to go (his words not mine)

Them arches will just suck you right in to giving a deposit
Im not going to bring a penny with me.....

Although i could see myself asking somebobdy out there for a loan of a fiver as a deposit!!!!

There has to be a reason why a 22B is sitting on a forecourt for that long , if the car was genuine and worth the money it would have been bought a long time ago , lets face it the 22b is probably the most sought after scooby of all time and something must be seriously amiss with that particular car not to have sold ,

think everyone on here would agree if ya want a 22b spend as much as ya can on a low mileage car wit lots of history ,

Hi Mark
As the lads say, Its a bit rough round the edges alright.
Although a couple of lads i know pointed out to me that it does have a few expensive wrc extras on it. One being a ceramic coated exhaust.
I would love a 22B myself and if i had the money i may consider that particular one but you would really only want to pay 15k max for it considering you can buy a well maintained example with a rebuilt engine for 19/20k sterling, mapped an all.
I think he has the original wheels for it but they are supposed to be in bits is how he described them so they must be bad.

I bought my 98 type r off them and had bad dealings with them.
Told me it was a 99 when i put deposit on it, rang me after to say it was a 98. Then i struggled to get money off final price.
Tires were bald so i asked for 4 new ones in the deal. Went to collect car to find no new tires on it. After a shouting match with ya man i got 2 tires out of him :angry1:
And the 'full service' it had before i picked it up consisted of new front wiper blades he put on while i was there and they fell off when i used them leaving the place.
Luckily i checked the oil that day to discover it was down at the minimum level on the dip stick :shock2:
Saying all this though, except for wear and tear which is to be expected on a 10yr old car, the car has ran perfect for me since day 1.

Definitly bring somebody who knows their cars, preferably Subaru's when you do find a car you like.

Whatever you choose to buy, factor in at least 2000euro for a full service, timing belt and mapping of the car
