22B is it worth it?

Absolutly beautiful car.
I love the 22B in a way my girlfriend wouldn't be happy about :smoochie:
Woth every penny.
Id buy one over any car if i had the money but id want a garage to keep it under wraps in when not driving it.
It drives me mad even to see my Type R gettin Shat on or full of tree sap.
I bought a 1998 issue of "CAR" magazine off ebay. Includes a 22B road test up against a 911.
And guess what? It walked all over the 911 :subaru:
It was also features in "EVO" 10th annerversary issue last month and a restoration of a 22B in this months Japanese performance.

Yes of course we all would have one over a standar type r but you are talking about a car that is 15k stg more than a standard type R, when technically a standard type R is arguably(great word lol) better. I think they are fantastic looking cars and anything that is rare draws a premium but as a few lads have said, unless I was minted, I wouldnt buy one. I bought a 05 sti when it was only 4 months old and spent more time looking at it rather than driving it which was a complete waste of money. For the original poster, buy a type R and drive it and enjoy it(unless you can afford to buy a 22b and not drive it).

22b all the way but there is one in Jap cars dublin for I think around €27,000 VRT'd and all.

I had a look at that one in Japcars Eric.
I had to talk sense into myself so i didnt do anything stupid like put a deposit on it.
I promised myself if i ever buy a 22B it has to have the BBS wheels on it.
The body work isn't too bad but its not a very original car. Has broken shiny grill mesh and large rally 22B bonnet vents and roof scoop which im not sure look like they belong there originally.
Has Tein driver adjustable coil overs, but the control unit is sitting looking like its been ripped out.
It has Modified/aftermarket boost solenoid and I think Greddy boost control unit.
Reasonably clean under the bonnet though.
Doesnt have original steering wheel and has that tacky fake carbon fiber interior trim.
Exhaust has some crappy lookin white tail pipe.
Has a Prodrive big brake kit fitted unless its a sticker on some other make kit.
I still want it but i think even at 27k its a bit steep as it would need thousands to return it to original condition.
Would make a good restoration project if you won the lotto and had plenty of time and money to throw at it

According to the website http://www.22b.com

I say initial as more than 400 were produced. A total of 426 were finally made. 3 cars are designated 000 and are owned by Colin McRae, Nicky Grist and David Lapworth, there is no number 13 and 24 cars were made for issue outside Japan. Of this 24, 16 came to the UK and were badged 22B Type UK and the other 8 went to the owners of Subaru concessions throughout the world. It is rumoured that a few of this final 8 went to private collectors, such as The Sultan of Brunei.

#13 actually went to the usa for promotional purposes but as far as i know it wasnt actually numbered at all. @that price that car is well worth it. Its not so long ago a friend of mine payed over 40k not cleared for one.

And here I am...

LOL

@ xpro
#95/400 came into the UK from Japan this time last year but wasn't registered until January (when it was 10 years old and therefore didn't need to get SVL (?) approval). It looks like a nice tidy example and the current owner appears to have removed some of the after market parts that were on the car when it came in (coilovers, STi rear trailing arms, Defi gauges, etc). It's definatley worth 20k Stg any day. It was up for £23,999 when it came in last year but I'm not sure what it eventually went for. They're slow to sell.

There are three or four 22B's currently for sale in Southern Ireland at the moment and none are in 'original condition'..

Depends on what you are looking for. My vote is in the modified corner at the moment but I can always go back! ;)

This is another I'd be considering especially as you can verify it's mileage (only 23,000 miles)

@ Gerry
The Type UK cars weren't numbered but from the chassis numbers we can deduce that they were built after the first run of numbered cars.

Hope that helps?

niall, How would you compare the driving abilities with Type-R 5/6? (handling etc.)

Depends on the setup of the car. They were hand built so you could drive 10 different 22B's and have 10 different experiences! The consensus generally was that the P1 was the best handling of the 2 door Type-R's from the factory.

TBH the modern cars are much better all round. Even Dan's 'jeep' (sorry Dan :) ) would probably beat a standard 22B cross country and on track. If you're just looking at like for like price wise 30k would buy you a clean Hawke Eye STi

but with the 22B you're buying a limited edition hand built piece of Subaru History, all be it 10 years old..

lads defo have to agree its not what the car is worth its what someone is willing to pay for one as its a rare piece of subaru history in my mind there the ultimate scoob

prob not worth the money but then again are 10 year old type r's worth 16000 as advertised not so long ago and some dealers still looking for it. i think the 22b will always be valuable and as far as the impreza goes its the one to have, its the escort cossie of ford, the enzo of ferrari,

Have to disagree with you there..an Cossie to any other escort is miles ahead..the 22b is not technically superior to the type r in any way..a special edition should'nt have anything in the range that comes close

I'd have the same view as you but then again I'm not a subaru fanatic or anything. I just couldnt justify paying for a car that could be outperformed and outhandled (albeit slightly) by another standard much cheaper version. Paying so much for basically rarity, prestige and a wide body kit just wouldnt make sense to me, when in my opinion you could just buy a type R, and then afford to maybe add a kit to make it look better than a 22B, and increase its power significantly. If money wasnt a problem then I'd buy one but otherwise I wouldnt. Personally I think it was very stipid of Subaru not to make it a much better car performance wise.

Ah ha! There's the point.. a standard Impreza is so special in the first place that it's hard to better!

LOL :)

Haha they should have held back on the type R so that the 22B would be superior LOL! What were they thinking :icon_biggrin:
