3rd Party Extensions On An Impreza

Hey lads,

Something got me thinking the other day,

We sold an old micra that belonged to my Girlfriend a few nights ago, the man that came to buy it said he was covered via his 3rd party extension to drive it, even though we held no insurance policy on the car, as long as his name wasn't on the logbook when he bought it

Was he wrong, and driving illegally? Or could I not do the same on any car I wanted to buy, be it an STI, Skyline or a Silvia??

As I get laughed off the phone at the moment with quotes being 23

Is that just a tempary law to allow people to drive newly bought cars home?

Thanks? :)

as long as you hold a policy in your name and its fully comp......

it will say so on your certificate of insurance....... driving other cars as long as its not owned by you or hired etc etc...

Yeah I have the driving other cars option and I have only 3 rd party Joe.

I wouldnt recommend using it to drive something like an Impreza or anything modified because I got a car taken of me in town one day, I was told by a sergeant that I have been driving around with no insurance. Car was impounded. the next day I rang the insurance, they said I was insured and they will get there legal team to back it up if I needed them to.

Rang Santry pound , the gaurd on duty said the car was wrongfully seized and there were no charges and to come pick it up.

A topic that's caused many a debate on here.

It varies between policies. My policy allows me to drive any other car fully comprehensive as long as its in someone else's name. Restrictions are that the car must be road legal i.e. taxed and nct'd and that I'm not using it as my primary car. Once I satisfy those conditions, I'm free to drive whatever I want.

People claim that there are certain situations that make it not legal if, for example, you were do use it on an impreza. Like the fact that technically you can't tax a car that's not insured as it is a requirement of the rf100 form. Simple ways around this are to keep the tax going by not letting it lapse as you are not required to fill in insurance details sun renewing online. Or alternatively, change someone else's insurance onto the impreza for a few days and tax it that way.

Of course, this is skating close to the edge of legality and a quick look on here and they will know that the car is really yours and the tax is a bit dodgy. But who of us isn't skating along the edge with regard to mods, etc. It's all a case of being fine until the day that something goes wrong like a crash and the insurance try to wriggle out of making payment on the car.

I know its borderline but I do it as I would only use the car once every 2-3 weeks so I don't see it as a problem. I wouldn't do it if the car was a daily driver.

The other consideration is that if you do it, the car is not insured against theft so you'd want to know that the car was very safe at night, tucked up in a garage or so.

I know I can drive it if the registered owner has it taxed, nct'd and insured in their own policy

But what if the car actually hasn't got a policy on it at all?

Yes your still covered because its your insurance covering you to drive it anyway.Condition are as Robbie said it must be road legal, tax , nct but does not need to have it own policy

Suppose best thing for me to do is ring quinn and make out I'm buying a new car, see what they say

You could just ring them and tell them you bought it see what they say

Damn it, it was going well untill I got tongue tied and said I was buying it... Then I tried to say its not in my name but he was having none of it..

Seems like they are pretty wise as to what I was trying to do
