4x4 Options

Petrolheads
Well lads, looking for a bit of advice and what you can come up with. Im in the market for a 4x4 for myself and the misses. Hopefully 2008 to avail of ( what was) cheaper tax. Ideally would like something qashqai sized but 4x4 in these are as rare as hens teeth. I'd go for a landcruiser myself but she wont be able to drive anything that big, or more importantly she would make sh1te out of something that big. Need a 4x4 as we live down in Monasterevin and snow, ice, weather etc is of concern Although id love to go back to Subaru fuel economy, tax and running costs wont allow now or even in the futute. Have approx 15k to spend on the right machine. A Santa Fe would not be out of the question but again tax is in the region of € 650 odd for the year

Any advice or suggestions welcome.

Cheers
Dave

I drive an isuzu d-max.Im getting 35 too the gallon and its all short journeys i do.it has commerical tax[288 euro] and it has plenty of room in the back for passengers. Its the best thing i ever bought.[after the scooby of course]Only bad point, there is a small fuel tank on them, 65euro will fill her.

I would consider buying a Forester with low millage for sub 10k and save the 5k for extra fuel, tax.
C&R Has some great examples.

Might be something to think about though....but i take your point re buying a diesel.

Personally, I wouldn't be inclined to go above 10k on any car these days as they just depreciate too much if you pay more than that.
After 3 years, the 10k car won't really owe you anything and you will still get something for it.

Does it have to be a 'jeep' or would a diesel legacy be ok?? I see two '08s on carzone for ~13k, should be even cheaper in the new year...

just an option as buying anything 4x4 will give you sh1te fuel economy. What about buying a regular diesel & splashing out some of the savings you'll make on a set of cheap wheels & top quality winter tyres? Would likely give you as much stability in the ice/snow as any 4wd/awd?

120km a day is 600 a week. If You work 45 weeks that`s 27000 km. If the Forester drinks 3 liter more than any 4WD You burned 810 Liters extra which is 1215 Eu. In 3 years time it`s 3645 plus the extra tax. Probably slightly exceed the 5k but surely won`t spend as much on service as with a quashqai. ( too much renault in it ) as said depreciation is an other thing.
Don`t want to be smart just wondering and putting together a policy for My wife why We need to buy a forester for Her later next Year

Ill never drive a petrol again, 1 for efficience, and 2 I prefer driving them. Going to have a serious look at a forester diesel.
