Any emissions experts out there?

Petrolheads
Hi lads, not often I get time to post, but doing so out of necessity for this one.

My car just sailed through the NCT... only failing on emissions and misaligned headlights  Now I've read a few emissions threads but looking at the results posted by others, my emissions failure figures seem low and I'm wondering whether anything can be tweaked under the bonnet to reduce them, or am I going to need a new cat or a borrow of one?

I have a MY96 Jap WRX - it was tested on a cold morning and I didn't have chance to go for a long spin beforehand, think the choke may well have had an effect, but am no expert... what do you think?

Engine oil temp: 83˚C

Low idle (800rpm) CO: 2.41% (above 0.5% = fail)
High idle (2890rpm) CO: 1.95% (above 0.3% = fail)
Lambda: 0.942 (between 0.97 and 1.03 = pass)

Cheers

A cat really needs to get upto temperature to work properly. You shoud give it at least a 30 min blast to be sure, as you dont know how long it will be sitting in the NCT car park before they test it. There is also a few additives that you can get but I don't know the name of them.. Get it into a garage beforehand and get them to check it while it is up to temperature. It could also be that the CAT is fupped if it is the original one.

Excellent, I really appreciate that, I'm way down in West Cork though so probably best to source one locally if I can, but if I get stuck I will come back to you. Thanks again Alan.

Throw some diptane in the tank next time and give it a bit of a drive beforehand. Drive at high revs to get the cat up to temp but not on boost as I think the diptane can reduce the octane level of the petrol and cause DET.

It could just be that it wasn't warmed up because those figures suggest it was de-catted, or cat not working. As Robbie said above next time throw in some dipetane and also give her a good drive beforehand. If that doesn't sort it, I'd suggest getting a replacement cat

Thanks Robbie and Phil  Will give that a shot too, does it cure hangovers too? :ponder2:

  Oh it cures them alright! Permanently :icon_hang:

Stick a mix of e85 in give it a good run

I think you had better give some ratios of dilution or else he will be needing more than a piece of paper from the NCT.

E85??? Is that not a bit rich?

I would have thought that if the cat was still there and wasnt dead then as long as its up to temp it would be fine.........

Let us know how ya get on!!! Mine due now in the new year some time i think and i dont want to be goin back and forward tryin to get it to pass......

Sorry yeah 20% of 1/4 tank, fill up full tank straight after..it should help with your emission readings.

Very interesting this, gonna have to try these out, failed nct the other day twice on emisions, first the co2 count failed and the lambda was perfect second time round the co2 was perfect and the lambda failed, back up again tomorrow so hopefully 3rd time lucky

But as the other lads said get your hands on a bottle of diptane, i put the legacy through with no cats on it and had been using diptane all week and the co2 on low idle was around .8 and high idle was around .7 and the lambda was spot on

If you need a lend I have a cat off a ver 3 '97 sti,if it will fit. Just passed my NCT so turbo back exhaust now back on car.Based around Kinsale if any use :dontknow:
