Apple Green Petrol

I doubt Topaz or Apple Green start off with 91 octane (E5 is supposed to add 4 octane points according to Maxol's E5). Surely they will respond to an e mail for details of its octane rating.

They didnt respond to mine anyway :icon_rolleyes:

I used to run about 4L of E85 with the remaining 45-50L of RON95 in my 05 irish sti and 03 jdm one.

The irish one used to go into limp under full boost on RON95 about half the time, but never did with the E85 in it.
JDM one never seemed to limp bar once, and that was after a full fill up of E5 in longford maxol.

So if you guys are stuck but can get E85, bring 5-10L with you in the boot, at 97C a litre its alot cheaper than NF!

(i will state that i dont have a knock link however, but performance seems good)

That would be an interesting test for someone with a knock link!
Brian, if you are mapped for 95 + booster, do you fancy trying 95 + 5L E85? just for the craic!!

Speaking of octane rating in US I think you miss one thing - it's rated in different way.
In Europe we use RON which is research octane number. In US they use AKI - anti-knock index which is (RON+MON)/2
MON is motor octane number.

In general petrol is more or less the same as in Europe - nothing worse anyway.
[/quote]

Using the calculations that Mon is around 8-10 points lower than RON then the US 93 AKI (Anti Knock Index) would equate to 97 RON which is close to Euro RON rated petrol but not quite as good as euro premium petrol such as Optimax and BP super plus which asre genuine 99 RON petrols or E5 if you believe it is genuinely 99 RON.

Frawls

In some countries we have 99-100RON petrols in fact - but 93AKI is about 97-98RON - good enough.
Also good to have bioethanol blends - in US they also have it, including e85.

Anyway the point was that they simply use different octane rating - some people think they sell maximum 93RON - so lower octane rating fuel/worse fuel than in Europe - which is simply not true. It's more or less the same, apart from those super/hiper/racer fuels :)

Eh no :snooty:

Theres too much water in E85 so even adding a small mix over a prolonged period will start rusting fuel tank & lines etc. Theres also no logic in seeking out a maxol station to find E85 to put 5 litres in & then drive down the road to top-up with normal 95. Why not just fill up with E5 in the first place at the Maxol station you've just been to, theres no cost difference between 95 & E5

Because not every Maxol station has E5, some still have 95.
And because if you had 5L of it in a can, in the boot and were away for a weekend or some such scenario, you could put that in, along with normal 95 if you were stuck.

I doubt you will get anymore water in your tank using E85, than you get purely from the condensation of the tank heating and cooling between day and night....... :ponder2:

Worth mentioning,
While I was in france recently,
I had the choice of 2 grades of petrol in most filling stations!
Super unleaded 98ron Or E10 (10% ethinol) 95ron unleaded!!
So the fuel with 10% ethinol was still only 95ron,
So Apple can very well be running 5% ethinol in there petrol, But that certainly doesn't mean higher ron!
I ran 98ron and half a bottle of booster, because she's mapped for E5 and third of a bottle!

I wonder what they're starting with then?
Must be 91 or something. Probably makes it a fair bit cheaper to buy then...

Just seen this topic now, just to add it depends on the quailty and potency of the ethanol being added.

Low grade petrol has always been available in France. I know they sell 91 octane but I'm also fairly sure I also saw 87 octane there one time so 95ul E10 could very well be the 87 octane with 10% ethanol added.

I hate france!!
It is seriously crap place to be a car enthusiast!

I did modball 2010 and a lot of it was driving in france. Always got the 98 octance but christ it was about €1.50 a litre and when you are doing a good 130mph down the motorways a 1/4 tank went on me in 10 minutes
