Are Subaru Engines Really soft?

Hi Folks,

I had a 99 leg b4 back in april (my first subaru) having come from the dark side (honda vtec). anyways i was first irish owner on the leg bought from a garage and after 3 days the lower engine went. think it was the big end bearings.

anyways after some haggling with the garage they finally gave me a 2.2 dohc vtec honda torneo euro r(i went back to the dark side!!)

hondas are bombproof to be fair to them, and the euro r is a lovely motor, but i wanna drop back down to a 2 litre for money reasons. (i know the subarus are costly to run, i only drive evenings and weekends)

anyways, before i get too off topic, im thinking of going for a 98 or 99 impreza wrx sti, maybe an r, havent decided. i love the fact the r is a 2 door coupe. the big question is, are subaru engines really this soft?

why do so many people have to get engine rebuilds? i have had a look through this section and there seems to be loads of problems with them?

my brother in law is a car mechanic and told me that the engines are very soft and has warned me to go for something else but the heart wants what the ehart wants!!!

will i get my heart broken again if i go for another subaru?!

thx in advance.

Compared to honda's they are quite soft - honda's only start to wake up after 5,500 as im sure you'll know  if you drive her easy n just enjoy the flat four, you'll have no trouble

A well maintained one shouldnt give trouble, if the car has been well serviced and allowed to warm up/cool down, been mapped, not thrashed every time its started etc etc then no reson for it to go bang.

thanks for the replies, do subaru engines require an awful lot of attention though?

im still a bit wary.

as said above if their remapped and well looked after then it shouldnt give you trouble if your still not sure these site traders damo (streetperformance) or dave (stituning) would have great experience on subarus

it seems like the engines go fairly regularly on them and it costs couple grand if its major.

iv had my type r 2 years and do drive it on, only 2 small things went wrong for me, the maf and a rad, which can go in any car.
and that was B4 it got mapped.

you hear of lads saying, i had a scooby OR evo and they were crap because there engine went bang.
but if they mapped them, and looked after it, it wouldnt have gone bang!!

mine went wallop after 4 hours drivin, but thats just bad luck, some jap fecker drove the boll0x out of her and sent it on its way!!

hope i can egt rid of my motor soon to go out and pick an sti up i think... :)

Mine's just coming up to 200,000km... and still as sweet as a nut to drive. Under the bonnet, the only things I've had to replace are radiator, header tank, power steering pump, clutch and rocker gaskets. Not too bad in 2.5 years ownership I reckon. Look after them and they'll be fine, but it can be pot-luck as to the one you're buying.

what kinda car was it?
out all the cars i had, this is the most reliable.
no major trouble, just the normal stuff

I have mine nearly 4 months and done over 10,000 km so far. Had to replace a clutch as the one in it was roasted thanks to the owner before me, other than that no problems what so ever :)

it was a 99 leg b4 rsk. for the short time i had it it was a serious amount of power alright. only 3 days though :(

i let her warm up and cool down properly and only used the maxol high ron juice.

im really likin the 2 door coupe type r sti's.

has anyone driven both the 2 door type r and a 4 door sti and can give a better worse comparison?! :)

cheers lads

well if u want a 2 door go for it.

99 type r has a shorter gear ratio and dccd, 4pots and 2pots at the rear where the standard sti doesnt.
thats the only real diff really, i think.
unless your looking for v-limiteds they have different interior and a higer 5th gear.

buy a impreza type r great car to drive i have one and i love it try and get one thats remapped try the for sale section on this site :subaru:

didnt you post the exact same thing in april?????????? you bought from them cowboys trade sales ireland if im not mistaken

alot of fellas blow there engines coz they drive the arse off the car, like changing gears at 7000 revs through each gear, thats fine to do in a type r civic or integra etc but doing it in a scooby your only asking for trouble... imo thats where the '' subarus are too soft " comes from....the clowns who drive the car like there always on a rally stage and then something goes pop and they start moaning that scoobys are crap :subaru: :subaru: :subaru: :D

huh? no? i had a thread about mapping when i had my leg? then went for the honda.

lol i was asking if a leg needed to be mapped for petrol in april.

now im looking for peoples opinions on engines and lastability?

i think you have too much time on ur hands.

i thought this was meant to be a helpful forum?

id say you were unlucky with the b4,but you can wreck an engine in about half an hour if its deting badly and your giving it some,so your three days were a long time if that was happening.some times if its the first owner on a jap import and the car hasnt been drivin since japan the petrol in the tank goes off and loses most of its octane level,so while the new owner loves his new power machine the engine is shitting itself in det.
if you want a type r make sure you buy a good one,one thats maped not just for power or buy new jap import and map right away, but not just a map that will save your engine ,regular oil changes ,NO DONUTS,and only driving her on the odd time will help her stay right, this still doesnt mean it wont go bang, some of the lads have had there cars mapped and still they went bang and in one case as early as on the way home from the mapping session,if i was you i would look for a cheap type r with the engine gone and great her rebuilt and a map.it the only way of knowing how good the engine is.theres a lad on this site and he only had a 04 st1 four weeks and she let go,so its not just the classics models doing it.
another option might be a uk spec turbo or jap wrx as these car are not as tuned as the sti and wont go bang as quick,i know of two uk spec turbos, one on 150000 mls and another on 100000 miles with no problems.now get out there and start lookin as hondas are only for tack days as they sound sh*t and go sh*t under 5000 revs.
