Are Subaru Engines Really soft?

As above buddy,if you dont look after any engine it will give up on you,as said if you are going for a jap yoke, get it mapped, makes it that much safer.
If you drive the ring outta it,well its not going to last,if ya warm them up,cool them down and regular service it should be fine,i have over 130000 miles on mine and not an a bit of trouble with her....
Take your time have a good look around there are some good ones about...

BEST bet is buying a sti that has already had a fresh engine rebuild with a remap just to be on the safe side
Cant remember who had one on this site for sale..........TRACT.........TRACTORGIRLY...........TRACTORTHING........

Had a 94 sti drove the hole out of her (not mapped) and never a bother just a new rad.Think she is still going

lol i was asking if a leg needed to be mapped for petrol in april.

now im looking for peoples opinions on engines and lastability?

i think you have too much time on your hands.

i thought this was meant to be a helpful forum?

I think he's gone lads, there's plenty of great advise there for ya as to how to keep the car right, wheither you listen to it or not is a different thing. Hope it works out for you

What ever you decide to buy, It would be a safer bet buying from a long term member of the club!
That way you know thye car has been run by someone who knows how to run a scooby safely!
It's a stressful time buying and tuning cars and it's easy to forget who you spoke to about what!
All the good advise is above!

Merc E320 V6 Diesel?
100,000 miles at average speed of 140MPH.

was watching an old top gear the last day and they had some car survey. subaru were near the bottom on reliability.
they were laughing at it.

Sorry Alan I really cannot agree that this is the reason you had failure................. :eek:mg:

i have driven dohc vtecs hondas for about 3 years and haven never replaced anything on either of my 2 cars, except a steering part on my last honda that was causing the engine management light to stay on, but which was already broke when i got the car.

theres people here saying that they had to replace things like radiators and other parts that they said were normal, normal for a subaru maybe.

i really really wanna go for an sti type r but i havent got 2 grand sitting in my bank in case the engine goes on one.

There is some very good advise on this forum and this thread in particular regarding buying a Jap classic in this case. Just one thing that maybe worth mentioning. As far as I am aware 101+ ron petrol was only introduced to Japan in 1997 so any cars built re the date in 1997 would have been mapped for 97/98 which gives them a better chance of survival and less risk of det when they arrive here. If you look at any of the unfortunate stories, from what I can see, not that many version 1 and version 2's have gone bang and they the old slanty intercooler so one would think that they are more prone to heat soak and potential det that way.
Thats just an observation from what I have seen but could be wrong.

I think theres a lot of scaremongering goin on here mate, dont be put off!! What the lads are saying is that there are one or two things known to go on occasion - not unlike the classic civics with their vtec unit issues. If you spend the money, find somethin decent and look after it, you'll have no problems with it. Buy an STi for the noise, comfort, sheer road holding and pride in lookin out your front window at an awesome looking machine sitting there. Its a thing of beauty, not a workhorse. If youre looking for something to roast to death, buy a honda or toyota :subaru:

Spot on man just what I was thinking,It helps if you have a little track terror to get it out of your system!
I have the legacy 4 months and to be honest I don't drive it on that much I a smooth comfortable car to be in,its effortly fast (relativly to the size of the car) so I don't feel the need to rev the nuts out of it like you average honda, toyota and I 've been there :nana:

thanks for the advice lads, i still cant make up my mind.

once my car is gone and i have the cash there, ill just decide and go for one.

im swayin towards a nice well looked after type r sti
