Are Subaru Engines Really soft?

its as simple as this, go for the one you want.

evo's have to serviced a lot more than scoobys so ive been told.
your going to encounter the same problems in running either of them.....
and if an evo engine goes, its a lot dearer to fix.

iv have a type r and drove a mates evo5 a few times before the engine blew in it, because it wasnt mapped.
the scooby is way more fun to drive.

1. Change the oil regulaly (more often the more modded she is) Using only genuine filter and the best oil you can afford! IMPORTANT Don't over or under fill her!
2. Use a good quality panel filter(on classics) and good quality induction kit on new age
3. Map her to suit our fuel and any mods, and tweek map to suit any new mods or change in fuel (every 2ron= extra 20bhp approx) when maped to suit,
4. No doughnuts unless you have a baffled sump to stop the oil from flooding to one side and starving the oil pickup and depriving the engine of vital lubricant,
Do these few things and she'll be grand for as long as you like,
There is nothing on the road that handles like an impreza, The type r is the ultimate classic!
Best of luck,
Dan

cheers for the advice, dyin to shift my motor now so i can pick one up

might even go for an sti :)

yeh with regards to evo's i heard the difs go real easy on them too.

im no mechanic mate but all i can tell u is that my 97wrx import is on its 3rd engine,1st one put a valve into a piston and one of head gaskets went on the second! i rekon if you dont drive it like you stole it and make sure the wastegate/dumpvalve dosent clogg and cause overboost youll be fine!

With respect rees, You most not have followed the above suggestions regard keeping her safe! Valve through piston says drasticly over revved or badly maintained timing belt, and head gasket could be she overheater or ran low on coolant at some stage, neither of wehich would be concidered scooby specific problems! I think you'd agree!

@copeyhagen, the most relyable sources of info are the club traders, or members with a few hundred post under there belts would generally know more than some fresher members! (NO OFFENCE NEWBIES) :D

My 04 wrx went belly up. Feck all mileage and full subaru service history. Fairly disappointed but i presume i was just unlucky...................who knows!!!!!!!!

This was defo a bad maintance problem! ie. low on oil and to full of oil,(both are catastophic)
Can someone please remind me which manufacturer holds the world endurance record for a car doing (i thing 200kph) for ages!! And which model engine????
Dan

[/quote] Eh dont think so pal. Car is very well looked after and that deffo wasnt the cause of it

OK :dunno:
It's just that the '04 wrx ej20 is not a highly strained engine and the ecu is clever enough to retard ignition to avoid detination,
So someone winding up the boost or something stupid like that would kill her or as said before bad maintenance!
I've been driving the socks off the forester which has the high compression engine (which isn't as strong as the regular ej25) but is more suseptable to tuning  I change the oil before and after every trackday, and keep a close eye on levels, She's done 2 full days this year, and 15 odd trips down the drag strip and 12 runs on the handling course so far this year, and I whole heartedly intend to keep that up, I've just bought a spare set of wheels and tyre for the track!
EJ engines and bullit proof if maintaned properly

eh dont think so pal your car wouldnt even start two months ago so if thats a car with full service histroy my yoke must be a bag of site, dont take the piss out of some one that pushes there car on and hasnt got any problems, ive never heard of a wrx engine going bang as there not tuned as much as the sti are,so there must be a problem with the oil feed on your yoke other wise it would have started first time and not have gone bang.eh dont think so pal ,nice

Twas the RS-RA Leggy me thinks :ponder:

bit touchy there pal. Car would always start just not on the first turn of the key and this didnt happen all the time. U'd hav 2 hav the car a wk to understand how intermittant that problem was. Just got word off subaru today that the 3rd big end bearing was starved of oil and they dont know why. Subaru ireland checked it out too and cant give a reason either. They are donating a block and gasket set.
Im not saying subarus are soft but just lettin the lad know what happened mine and for no apparent reason. maybe she was abused b4 i got her

id say a fair few of the imports have had the sh1te drivin out of them alright.
