Bad news Confirmed - Engine out job

Sunday Drivers
Hey guys,

My 03 jdm sti has been gulping oil since i bought it in march.
It only has 45,000kms "on the clock" but does look fresh so wouldn't be sure its clocked.

Anyway, i did a compression test yesterday.

If cylinder 4 is the one closest to the turbo:

Cylinder 1: 150psi
Cylinder 2: 25psi
Cylinder 3: 135psi
Cylinder 4: 135psi

The plug that came out of cyl 2 was pretty oily, all the rest had a nice clean burn. (very light brown an dry)

Im guessing it either has to be cracked or pinched ring/damaged piston
Or else a valve not shimmed correctly, and now burnt.

I'm fairly handy with engines and have rebuilt countless 2 an 4 stroke bike engines, and done 2 engine transplants in VW's, so I'm considering doing it myself, as the ???'s are tight.

Anyone ever had a similar afair with their car, and a price on a drive in drive out repair?
Cheers

sorry to here your troubles

price depends on what spec you want to go, if its just a road car i would get it rebuilt by one of are traders as a standard engine or you could buy a subaru short motor for around 2k mark, both the 2.5 and 20l are roughly the same price and you could fit that yourself.

if your going to do track days, a forged engine will be better as its stronger but more expensive, there lots of options out there form standard subaru 20l subaru blocks to 2.5 forged rebuilted blocks

really depends what you want it for

Primarily just a road car, but I do intend on doing a handful of track days.

I'd be hoping to get it totally sorted for about 2k.
Standard crank an rods are able for more power than I'd be aiming for. (standards are good for about 430-450 bhp??)
Anyone know roughly what valves cost?

I just hope it doesn end up a damaged valve which has also damaged head and cams!

Sorry to hear the troubles fella!!!!
Hopefully its not too expensive to get up and running again!

How long do you intend to hold onto the car? That would be a big factor for me in what spec of engine I went for when the work is getting done!!!

price work with Ali - Burrows, Sti Tuning, JGM, Coture, and all the other traders

they will give you a spec based on what you want to do aswell as what you can afford (want) to pay

Think I'm gona do it myself, with a friend of mine also.
Have access to any tool snap on ever made, and a lift, hoist etc.

If the most bhp I ever wanted to get from it in the future was 400bhp....

What do I need to go changing to accomodate an upgraded turbo at a later date if I wanted?

At the moment I have full 3' de-cat turbo back for it.
Induction kit
Uprated clutch.

Thinking of a Wossner piston kit an rings, new oil & water pump and T-belt kit for starters..

Would i need to change rods presuming they aren't damaged to a tougher than stock rod?
Head bolts need upgrading?
Fuel pump?
All input appreciated, thanks guys!

Standard internals are only ok to 400, that could be even pushing it on dangerous side,
If you trailer that car up to Ali burrows, you will get to drive her back home and only cost 1800 gbp.
I wouldnt even contemplate building myself when someone like Ali is building them for that price.. Go price all the gaskets required, seals, oil pump, oil modine, oil, plugs, timing belt, tensioner etc etc and you wont be long realising where the money goes

Ye, its a pretty impressive price from Ali.

I reckon its gona cost about 1200 to do it myself.
The hardest bit is probably getting the engine out, once its out the rest is easy.
Hmm, decisions decisions.

I think the standard turbo (VF37) is good for about 370bhp max, it can't flow more than that.

Ah right, no.

The guy I bought it off had it almost 2 years and only did about 2,000kms!
Mileage checked out because I got in contact with the previous owner who was able to tell me what was on it when he sold it.
