best mod?

just wondering what are the best mods for a type-r for good horse power without breaking the bank??? Ive owned a 99 sti type-r now for nearly a year and all I have on it is full exhaust system.Its the first car Ive owned that I havent gone mad with mods,was thinking about geting an ecutec map done soon,so wud like to see what mods rest of ye have and what kinda power,money spent etc
 
thanks dave,ya think il go for ecutec alright,what turbo upgrade would you recomend? and what kinda money? I wanna put a new clutch in before i do anything,its not slipping but juder's on take off and can crunch 3rd gear sometimes.might go for the june mapping if i have it done in time.

Sounds like a master/slave cylinder issue there?

You can still get the ecutek/simtek remap with anti-lag, then I'm guessing further down the line if you do a turbo upgrade it could be tweak mapped?

3rd gear issue is probably a gearbox synchro problem..

As for mods, I found that if you start, then you probably won't stop :lol: .. I'm looking for a type-r at the moment and would hope to run it at about 330 eventually and leave it there but we'll see what happens :smile:
 
Ya thats true,have to have a think about new turbo.the one advantage of getting it now is that i could have it mapped once and then just drive on,but then its the extra cost damn!!.id like around 330bhp that would be nice.my engine is good,was rebuilt last year before i bought it so should handle it.
Dont know if my clutch prob is hydraulic,dont seem to have any leaks anywhere.but il double check It feels like the disc is worn.if you drive handy it changes away fine but if you kill it it crunches in 3rd,think the syncro rings are bit shagged.
 
I dont think the not breaking bank budget applies to anything Subaru...
Talking rougly, 700-1000 for ecutek alone.. Depending on Turbo, your looking at around 1000 + for a good After market turbo, Dave and Ali on here i think have the Vf48 turbos new for i think 600 euro, Clutch and labour probaby 500-600. You gearbox crunch could be box related or clutch related as in weak pressure plate... The list is endless but it gives you a rough idea of the prices involved..
See you have an exhaust system, do u have a decat already??
 
alright gav,hows things boy?long time no hear.you know me now once i start mods i cant stop,im shocked ive had this sti a year without doing anything. id say il deffo go for the ecutec anyway and take it from there.hows your car going?
 
ya kenc i have a decat full system,Do-luck panal filter on the way and I have a walbro pump in my shed must just throw it in.the good thing with me is there will be no labour bills as im a mechanic so will just have to pay for parts,but ya your right even at that the amount can easily add up.with standard turbo what kinda power gain will be achieved roughly with ecutec alone?
 
Still ongoing with my car. Should be done around august. Need it ready for the trackday in september. I bought a rollcage for it from Dave a couple of weeks ago. Nice lad to deal with. He will put you on the right track with any mods.
 
How are you running a Decat without getting overboost and fuel cut?? Was car by any chance ecu tekd already?
Running a decat and not being mapped shoul be causing issues i would have thought :ponder:
 
ya have full de-cat,dont seem to have any probs with overboost or feul cut.ive had a few sti's over the years and was told that once you fit full system you need to get remap straight away but maybe ive been lucky cause ive never had any probs that way.but i suppose once you make any mod its always safer to get map.
 
Ive the mods dave mentioned above..Full decat,ported manifold and up-pipe,walbro fuel pump,panel filter,VF48 turbo and ecutek..Makes for a nice quick type r..After that your talking big money..That lot aint cheap either.
