Biker airbag jacket

Great idea... they should be compulsary!

Could of done with one of those... knackered my back coz of bike crash!

Again.

If it can save even one lives they should come with your bike from new and be compulsary.

Look useful...
Dont know about making them compulsory tho lads,
Come on, arent we told what to do enough in this country?

I think the government could make an incentive scheme, like not adding any VAT to them,
or a scheme allowing people to buy them at a discount..
Just not a huge fan of being told what to do all the time..where does the nanny state stop?

A decent jacket with spine protection is a good start for most people.
More and better training is needed like a sore thumb too!

If I'd been forced to wear one of those when I got my bike... in hindsight I'd have no problem with been told I had to wear one... It would be easier than having to deal with on/off chronic back pain! By law you have to wear a helmet for saftey... why not a jacket??? It's not a nanny state thing ... it's just common sense!

Back protectors aint worth sh*t either... I've a mate in a wheel chair that had the most expensive kevlar back protector in his Dianese jacket... lot of good it did him when he slid inot a kerb at 20 mph! My kevlar jacket did no good either in protecting me... all the armour in the sleeves shattered when I hit a telegraph pole!

The training you suggest better be for other road users too... as they are the cause of most bike accidents!

Dont get me wrong, Im all for saving lives and preventing injury, but at what cost??

How would you feel if the government said it was limiting the max power/speed of bikes to 20BHP/60mph for all bikers?
Im sure that would save lives.
What about not allowing cars over 100HP until you're over 25? Sure that would save lives too.

Drivers could wear helmets in cars too, preventing brain injuries.

Im not taking the piss, I just think the road we're going down with all these laws is a very slippery one.
Have to draw the line somewhere. Have to make compromises.
Training is the way forward-like you said-for everyone!

But training won't save you when you get thrown off your bike regardless whether it's biker error or other road users error. Accidents happen... no training can prevent that.... but it lessens the chance of a small stupid accident from killing you!!

You are so vulnerable on a bike.... any protection has to be a great thing. I'm sure most bikers would quite happily wear one... especailly if it could save your life.... and help your insurance premiums!

Good points there lads !!!

For me, it should only be compulsory; if what you do effects others !!!

Yes the Air Bag Jacket is a great idea but if I come off the bike at 100mph
it's not going to effect YOU !!!! anymore or less whether i ware that Jacket or not.

Yes It will have a big effect on me and any injuries but that should be my choice and
my choice alone.

Now you could argue the point that if I was on a medical card that it's every TAX payer
has to pay for my injuries simply because i choose not to ware it :dontknow: :dontknow:

but where dose that leave me if i have Private Health Insurance
It effects no one bar me !! :dontknow:

I reckon it's only a matter of time before the government try to limit all our cars :angry1: :angry1:
ie.... 50kph in a 50 and so on.......

Where will we be then.

Niall.

Great point Niall!

I've just come back from Florida. The place is absolutely packed with bikes.
If you wear a helmet there(which most people dont!) you dont need any bike insurance!!!

If you dont wear a helmet, then you need your own insurance-simple as!
And in America you pay for your own health insurance too-no state care!

I like their mentality, like Niall said, as long as you arnt affecting others.

It doesn't affect you or me if some idiot spends 50 quid on a bike helmet and dosen't value there own life... but it makes common sense to protect yourself the best you can and get the best gear! This isn't a nanny state issue... it's just a self preservation thing! Yes it should be your choice whehter you wear one... but how many young lads are gonna spend the money if given a choice! None! So make it compulsary and it may deter a lot of them from jumping on bikes at an immature age and paralysing themselves or killing themselves! I only feel this strongly coz I was one of these little twats that got the most powerful bike I could and thought i was invincible! You generally don't make the most educated decisions at a young age, so yes, let the authorities make em for you! It's illegal to ride a bike without a helmet for bloody good reasons...! Same it should be illegal to ride one without one of these jackets.

Regadless of private health cover or medical cards... we are all affected... it's our taxes that pay the hospital bills, rehab centres and continuous disability allowance that victims get payed... along with the insurance premium costs that are affected by all the payouts and the increases in Private health expenses ... which went up 23% this year.... which i'm sure is partially caused by bike accidents involving severe injuries! The bills alone for the 2 operations I had to sort me out cost over 15,000 yo yo's.... not including 4 months of rehab... 2.5 months of disbaility allowance.

I don't agree with us being told how to drive or what speed to drive at... but I do agree with being told we need to protect ourselves the best we can.... IMO half of us seem to stupid to make that call ourselves!

See where you're coming from Jamie...
not that I agree

On a lighter note, wonder what would happen if you hopped off bursting for a piss at the side of the road, and forgot to undo the wire??

Was also thinking this....
That jacket could worsen things with the mentality it might create.
How many young riders (who already feel invinceable) would think they're
donning a superman cape with that jacket, and feel a false sense of added security?
"ah, shur the jacket will save me"?
:dontknow:

If it does genuinely save lives,I wonder how long it will be before the World superbike championship and bike racing in general
adopts it like F1 and motorsport had adopted the HANS device-head and neck restraining device??
Maybe could have saved the lives of some irish road racing ledgends in the last few years(maybe)??

Ahhh sure they think they are invincible anyway... seen some idiots on bikes lately! :angry1:

Yep.... wondered what would happen if you got off and forgot to unplug! :icon_redface:

Possibly would have saved a few...most died of mangled organs and internal bleeding caused by bad impacts!

Jamie ..............as for teenagers yes that is a valid point , doubt any 16yr old wants
to pick up his old-doll wearing a jacket that his parents made him buy etc..........

But your missing the point: Whether you or the government think someone has the Intelligence or not,
to decided on wearing a jacket its irrelevant . It's that person's life , it's their choice , you can't live someone's
life for them, so stop worrying about what they are or are not going to do with it.

..................Just worry about your own !!!!

It would be like banning cigarettes & Drink , yes they kill , destroy lives & families , cost the health service a fortune
but hey if i wanna drink, i'll drink .

Hope you can see the point im making

Niall.

I do see the point your making.... don't get me wrong! But you have to admit it does affect all of us in some way or another every time some biker gets killed!

I've also spent time visiting a mate in rehab centre too.... and the amount of bikers in there paralyzed for life would shock the hell out of you! That affects us all... the costs involved in full time treatment and assisitance has to be huge... whether it comes from the health service... private health companies or the insurance companies... it affects you and me!

If these jackets where compulsary and prevented even 10% of accidents from resulting in death or life long injuries... than why not. How many lives have helmets saved.... and they're compulsary!

are you still into bikes since the accident jamie??

Nah... the odd spin on a Moto x bike... but no more road bikes for me! I'd in total about 6 good crashes (1 was my fault).... the last one fecked me up badly and shot my confidence to bits! I do miss them something terrible.... nothing is more involving to drive/ride or gives a bigger adrenaline rush time & time again!

They are just way too dangerous and I'd advice anyone to avoid em.... I know... big hyprocrite to have ridden em for years... but so lucky to still be alive and getting to share the rest of your life with frineds and family is kinda more important!

i get ya,,i love watchin them but wouldn't dare get up on one,,and i'm only 21,,do ya ever go to the road races??

Dont know bout that!
I raced formula Sheane in Mondello for two years, and its double the rush of anything I ever had on a bike!
Think of it like a big gokart with 150BHP and 25 other mentalists surrounding you, and mad to pass you!
Fairly safe too-at least compared to fast road bike riding!!

I have my Sheane for sale if any x bikers are interested:))) 0-60 sub 4 secs...150+MPH
